I would like to add a Aiu unit to my DCS layout. Currently all my Realtrak switch operate off of track power do I have to have a seperate power supply hooked up to the switches to make the Aui work? I just spent time running wire to one switch and ran the the red, black and greenwire from the terminals on the switch to the corrisponding terminals on the Aiu. Used the Wife app on the tablet to add a switch and all I get is an error message that the says there is no switch. What am i possibly doing wrong this time?

Key point here being missed:

How are you powering your TIU which then also powers the AIU and it's internal relays?

The TIU has 2 basic ways of powering- borrowing power from Fixed input 1, OR using a separate power supply plugged into the aux port.

However, there is also a problem where a revision L TIU logic only with a USB port is powered via 5V from the cable of the WIU. This gives you a false sense the TIU is fully powered because it cannot power and detect an AIU which requires 12V as regulated out of the AIU port from the TIU. That can only happen as long as Fixed input 1 or the AUX power input to the TIU also has well above 12V.

So again, ideally, you need a roughly 14-18V power source, plugged into the AUX port of the TIU when using an AIU. This assures constant power so the AIU is detected and powered, and ignores the state of power on Fixed 1 which could be turned on or off.

Again, as stated in this reply, the AIU doesn't sense or know the power input to the relay contacts. It simply doesn't care, it's a control device. However, it DOES require that the TIU is properly powered- so that it can regulate and send out power to the AIU via the AIU cable and connection port. If your TIU doesn't have power to properly power the AIU example being fed only by the USB of the WIU with only 5V logic power, then the TIU won't power, nor detect the presence of the AIU.

A switch can be added even when there are no wires attached. I did this on my layout as a test. You can hear the relays click.

I am powering thr Tiu with a Z750 brick thru the Aux Power Input Port. I wired the switch to the Aui just like the picture in the Aiu manual. I also left the manual switch throw lever that comes with the switch still wired to the turn out, do I need to disconnect the manual throw lever?

My Wiring is like the picture in the Aiu manual on page 7 and it goes on the switch from right to left (green wire on straight, red wire on curved , black wire on AC ground, brass jumper plate connected to the last two screws on switch.

Wiring on Aiu  from right to left SW1 (In hole Black wire, #2 hole red wire curved, #1 hole green wire straight).

All my switches on layout operate using track power.

Good you have the TIU powered via AUX input and should have good power.

No- that's hasn't yet solved your AIU problem of detection. That right there is "the problem".

Stop for a second, and ignore any wiring into the relay terminal of the AIU- it has nothing to do with this stage of troubleshooting. The AIU uses relays- so even if your wiring was wrong on the relay outputs- doesn't matter at this stage.

You need to get the TIU to detect the AIU and display that in the app. Then testing using the switch function in the app, you should be able to hear the relay click and NOT get an error message.

Then we can go down looking at output wiring.

Well I went back down to the layout and unplugged the phone cord that came with the Aiu. I straightened it out and plugged it back in  I noticed that the plug on the Wiu does not clip in very solid but I reseated  the plug. I was able to add a switch with out it being wired to the Aiu I can hear a solid activation when pressing straight or curved. Now I just have to hook up the wires again and i should be on my way. On a side note I also had to shut  down my old apple tablet and reboot it because at first try it lost connection with the DCS System.

My error that i was receiving prior to all the above was (unexplained error, can not connect route)

I reconnected my switch wires like they were before and the switch works!

Thanks for the help.
