I just got a MTH Alco S2 switcher. I thought I would look at converting it to 2 rail. The pilots are very basic looking and have the large hole for the 3 rail electro-coupler. It actually looks like it was that way on the proto type? I just found that surprising. They (some?) were modified at some point in time and a plate was added.

Precision Scale has a casting for the Alco switcher coupler pocket. I have used them when converting Lionel Alco switchers to 2 rail. The photos you posted show these locos in later years with their footboards removed. Prior to that time there was an open space below the coupler.

Those ones Joe?
edit: dug out the PSC catalog and those look correct I guess. I'll try them.
That's P&D's site. Thanks.
Will this fit?

I don't know? I don't have any Atlas RS1s. It looks like it might/should. Nice spacer plate too.
I have some die cast, 2 rail pilots from a Weaver Alco RS3. They look like they're they'd fit your S2.
Let me know if I can buy them and thanks Rich,

Engineer Joe,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The P/N of the PSC Alco coupler pocket is 56210. I removed the entire bottom of the casting where the Kadee pocket is to be installed. The top half of the castings was soldered to a piece of brass barstock that was machined to make use of the original Lionel coupler mounting pin to hold it in place. I have never converted the MTH Alco so I don't know how you would mount the casting to that model but the casting looked good on the Lionel Alco S-2 once it was installed. The plastic one that is shown above looks like a good fit to me.

Thanks Joe.
I'm busy with a family matter and trains have to wait a bit.
You can have them. They're just sitting in my parts box. I'll contact you via e-mail and get your shipping address.

Thank you Rich! My pictures went in your quote?
I forgot about converting this engine as I built a three rail loop. It has the 3/2 trucks for easy wheel swaps.
I did also get the precision pockets from P&D. They look tiny like they are for scale couplers and KDs might be too big? They might be HO scale?
they are the gold ones in the bag in the last picture. Next to the black pilots from Rich.

Hi Joe.
Again, I'm SO sorry it took so long to get these to you. I completely forgot about them!
It looks like the S2 are a bit different than the RS3 variety I sent you, but I think they could be modified and work for you.
Those precision pockets look like they're some kind of "Proto:48" part. They don't look like they'd work with Kadees. You'd have to ask someone who knows more about those.
Anyway, happy modeling!
No apology needed. Thank you very much. They look brand new!

I know this is an older post but does somebody have the 3d printed Alco Coupler pockets available. I am converting a Lionel S2 to a 2 rail unit. I bought the PSC part from P&D Hobby not sure I like it because the slot in it is not big enough to slide a Kadee coupler box into it. I read above where the person cut the bottom out of it and modified it. I bought a 3d printed insert for a Lionel Gp30 unit I am also converting and found it to be great. Thank you all.
