So I've started building an Altoona Modelworks engine house kit and I wanted to document the construction and progress of the build. This is the very first kit I've ever built and would appreciate any feedback or pointers.

The AM kit is a very nice one. Laser cut wood and detailed instructions.

I started with the base, It's laser etched MDF with grooves cut for Atlas track.

Now, the instructions call for painting the mdf but I didn't like how it looked so I decided to modify the floor.

So I cut up a bunch of stripwood, grained each of the planks with the Micromark wood grain tool and stained them with Hunterline wood stain.

Then I painted the whole base with aged concrete and after it dried, I started gluing each of the planks individually to the base.

After completing gluing all the boards to the base, I installed three Ross single rail pieces into the slots cut for the Atlas track. I had to slide them back and forth in the grooves a few times to get them to fit and then glued them into place. Then I used some weathering powder to simulate some soot and grease on the floor.

Then I test fit it into the layout and powered it up. Everything worked fine.

And so far that's all I have done. Next up are the side walls and front and rear. So what do people think? Also any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

I've built Altoona's engine house and it's a terrific model. Can't praise it enough for quality and price value.

Nice idea to re-plank the side house floor. Grease stains a realistic touch.

I'm sure you've read the heck out of the instructions, but don't be afraid to do it your way, if their way is maddening. For me it meant NOT adding the rafters to the roof and then clunking down the roof onto the walls. I can't tell you how many times I screwed this up. But that's me.

I added the rafters, then did a "group glue" with the roof, using rubber bands and all sorts of wrapping materials to be sure it snugged tight. Can't remove the roof, but I don't mind, because I'm not detailing the interior.

If you are, then... follow the instructions.

Bottom line...Take your time... enjoy the journey... the arrival will take care of itself.

The last two pix feature my sanding facility as well.

Nice job on the floor. I like how they prepared the base to accept 3-rail track. I'm planning on building an engine house for my layout and am doing the detailed drawings for laser cutting. It's going to be bigger (40") to accommodate big Pennsy steam, but it will have to handle Ross trackage on 3.5" centers. Unfortunately AMW doesn't conform to my spec.

Hello everyone,

Finally have an update on my build. Sorry for the delay, I work a lot and have several projects going at the same time.

This is the first sidewall of the engine house. I grained and stained the outside wood, and the didn't like how the inside just looked plain, so I went and grained and stained and glued individual stripwood to the inside. As you can see from the pictures it made a huge difference in appearance. Now i have to decide whether I should redo the outside wall with stripwood......what do people think? Keep the outside wall as is or redo it with stripwood?

Thanks,

Adam

Your work looks fantastic and the structure looks to be very substantial!  Like Putnam Division (Put), I am a novice and, having just ordered the AM "Pennsy Signal Tower Kit" for modification into a B&O/SIRT tower, I will be following your progress every step of the way.  Bob's photos of the finished product prove that it's worth the investment.

Well! After almost 1 year exactly, I am pleased to say, I have finally completed the engine house! FYI I went and glued stripwood to the outside too. Stripwood EVERYWHERE! I used a ton of stripwood. I really think it made a difference though.

I learned a lot building this! I know I made a couple mistakes still, in particular in lining up the roof trusses, but I think it turned out pretty good for my first build. My next step is to detail it (I bought a Raggs engine house detail kit) and I will post some more pictures once that is done.

Here are the pictures, I hope you like it!

I just read it all.  What's not to like?  The pictures into the building look just like the real thing.  Very cool.  Now that you've done it your way, I bet you are thinking you could scratch build something similar.  It is just wood pieces and buy the windows, doors and some detail pieces, all easily available.  Make a scale drawing...  Off you go.  Very nice building.  Glad to see you got it built within a year.  You could have lost your permit.  Cheers,       BK
