Can I use a Lionel Transformer on American Flyer track to run an American Flyer engine?

Yes. I've used a KW and CW80 to run Flyer trains with no problems.
Sure, a just don't turn it up all the way. AC low voltage (less that 20V) is the same for the purpose of this conversation from different brands.
I've been told not to push most American Flyer much higher than 15V and they are flying at that speed in my experience.
What specific Lionel Transformer did you have in mind?
I plan on using a small 1033 Lionel transformer. I just have a small loop of American Flyer track to run a Franklin engine with a Cow on the Track .

I completely agree. It is OK to use a Lionel Transformer (any kind) as long as you don't crank it up to near its maximum voltage of 18 to 20 volts. As Vernon states try not to go any higher than 15 volts. I have a couple of friends who ran their Flyer engines with Lionel Transformers cranked up to around 18 volts and their motors eventually burned out.
I agree with the above- don’t go over 15V for Gilbert Flyer- same thing with Marx. You should be certainly be good with the 1033- even the high nominal 16v of the U and A posts is in reality just above 13V. There’s a reason Gilbert Flyer had their voltage output limit at 15v. Hope that helps- and keep us updated with photos!!
