I havent heard it yet aside from on youtube... they say they've improved the sound, but have they managed to get a little rumble going? The only PS2 engine I've got that has anything close is an AC6000, I guess because its huge.

I'm on the fence a little here... because I've been thinking about giving legacy a try (I've heard it). but investing in another control system has be hung up a little bit... if PS3 has some decent bass in it, it might keep me on this side of the fence for a little bit longer.

Thanks.

What has me on the MTH side of the fence is the low cost option of

the remote commander. TMCC and Legacy are great ( our club uses it )

but it seems to be $250 or nothing. For $40 I can run features of proto

2 at home on my small layout.

So if 2 engines are equal then the MTH engine will win for now.

I'm not sure why Lionel doesn't make a low end TMCC setup.

Both make great engines but for me it comes down to the control

system I have now.

At York they announced a wireless control for the new Thomas sets.

hopefully they will expand this to other products.

If possible and it will fit try a speaker upgrade on your PS2s. I have done a few of mine with some success. Low end performance is greatly improved. Described here

The electronic boards on the PS3s are smaller, theoretically leaving room for a larger, better speaker in a diesel. Whether or not they give you one with PS3 is a different issue. The 4 ohm ones from Madison sound are excellent.

I have only one PS3 loco - the French 241-A (a 4-8-2) from the European series.  Stunning detail and paint - the best I have seen this side of high-end brass stuff.  Great, shrill European whistle sound - I sometimes run it just to hear that whisle.  Runs as good as but no better than Legacy.

Answer to your question: No. The sound is noticeably not up to the standards of the latest Legacy.  It's not really bad, but I cannot tell any difference from a number of PS2 steamers I have, and lately Legacy steamers (and diesels) have really impressive sound.  But on the other hand, there is that detail and paint - wow.  It's the best looking shelf queen I have, for certain.
