I'd love to put lights on a few things and maybe even repair some old KLine cars that the wheels stick, but have cool lighting.

Check 50-1030, it is a kit like you want but it is about $50
Look for BD-0000062, it's a freight car pickup that can be added to many MTH freight trucks. There is also the BD-0000092 with the plastic pin to avoid shorts to metal car bodies.

Those look great. Do they clip in, or is a modification required?
I think one of the 2-rail guys is selling a set of these on eBay right now! The item number is 202635695285. I’m not the seller and have no affiliation with the seller, I only mention it because they seem identical to the photos in this thread.

Here's the Lionel and MTH trucks with and without the pickup installed. As you can see, this style of Lionel truck has the square hole for mounting the pickup.
