Watching "Switchback" with Dennis Quaid last night got my creative juices flowing. The movie shows some outstanding wide-angle shots of trains moving through the Rocky Mountains. Building this in O-scale would require a huge footprint.

Mountain-dominated layouts are few and in-between in O-scale/gauge. In fact, I cannot recall seeing too many at all in the past 30 some years of reading train magazines. Making realistic mountains is very challenging...I spent the better part of 2 years trying to build just one medium sized mountain. I don't want to share the pictures just yet as it is not completed. Rich Battista made some great looking mountains in his layout.

Has anyone done a mountain-dominated layout? Can you share pictures and/or videos?

An excellent example of "mountain" railroading (though not in O scale) was John Allen's "Gorre & Daphetid RR."  That's pronounced Gory & Defeated.  There is a Groups.io group with tons of pictures showing how his railroad wound through the floor-to-ceiling mountains, often crossing the same chasms multiple times.  The effect is just stunning!

In my opinion, terrain-height variation is an important feature for model railroad scenery, but an O scale layout would need a very large footprint to model the height of a mountain. However, it is possible to model hills, and I have done that on my 12’-by-8’ and 10’-by-5’ layouts, which were intended to look like the hills of Connecticut.

12’-by-8’ layout completed in 2004.
