Has anyone else had issues with the new PS3/2 boards fitting in the locos. I have had three railking steam engines that I needed to replace the 5v boards and tried to fit the new alternative.  A RK Blue Comet, PRR K-4 and a 0-6-0 switcher.  The first two the boards were mounted in the boiler and in no way would the board fit.  The 0-6-0 has a sloped tender and again, in no way could I make it fit. 

I was wondering if any other techs had any luck with these boards, so far I am 0-3. 

 

In the case of the k-4 and BC, I could mount it in the empty tender, but I would need to rewire the entire engine, is that the only way?

I used a 3v board to complete the repair on each, but concerned when the 3v's become phased out.

Having to extend a connector or two isn't all that unusual.  I had to do that with some installations of the older PS/2 3V replacements for 5V boards.   I've done a few of the PS32 boards, but they all fit without changing wiring.  I haven't tried to put them into an 0-6-0, that could be a tight fit.  I did find that the carrier for the PS32 board is wider than the 5V set, I mounted one in a diesel without the carrier to make it fit.

 

It's not unusual to have to make a new heatsink as Barry states, I've probably done that with at least a third of the 5V replacements, both the PS/2 and the PS32 boards.  I bought sheets of .064 aluminum that I cut to size to fabricate heatsinks.  When you bend, use some heat, and it tends to make it bend nicer without possible cracking of the aluminum bend.

Bill,  I have done 20 of these so far and yes you will not fit this in some models.  If you look at the PS-3 upgrade kit topic locked above in the reference, I have posted some pictures.

 

The board is wider and sits taller and especially since the harness connections are all at the top of the board.

 

So I have found so far that the PS-32 won't work in:  PR Atlantics (tender is not tall enough.  Even on its side the tender shell can not touch the frame.  You would have to use spacers to raise.  The B6 switchers, tender too small.  The DD-1 unless your willing to trim the interior plastic.  Not enough length.  Some Diesel the shell may bulge out slightly, but can be fit.  Even some midsize tenders where speaker is in the front or middle can provide problems unless you mount the board upside down.  You can use the PS-2 3V steam bracket to do that.

 

So for some I think we will need to wait for the S gauge board.  That may solve this, or maybe MTH will revise the board with either a harness for the daughter board, or if you made the Super caps a plug in you could lower the profile height.

 

They are aware of the issues. 

 

I do have a starter set engine or two to do, so I will see.  My initial impression is it may fit, but I have a feeling the easier route is an upgrade with harness to move it to the tender.  G

This latest repair a RK K-4 PRR has a narrow boiler shell, So I may try to put it in the tender and redirect the wiring.  The only issue I have with that is the speaker in the tender sits in the center , so I would need to move that.  either way a bit of work. 

 

it is good to know that MTH is aware of this issue
