Hey all, an interesting piece is going to be auctioned next weekend and I was hoping to learn a bit more about it. Here's a link:

I've only seen this 1 gauge van once before, and last time, the fella was asking 7.500 Euro for it! I've seen two o gauge versions also. Have any of you come across this English market van in 1 gauge before? I know where to get my hands on one, and was wondering if anyone has any insight into its actual value. Just because someone is asking 7500 euro doesn't mean anyone will pay 7500 euro. And I noticed this auction house that is selling the one in the link has started many of their prices sort of high. Is anyone able to find it in a catalog or know the years it would have been made? Thanks all!

Several members here have impressed me with their knowledge of German tinplate; I think you've just got us all stumped with this one.  Asking about prices is particularly difficult (subjective, relative, what the market will bear, etc etc), and for something as infrequently traded as your little reefer, there probably isn't much data available.

You might take a look at this reference "data bank" for Marklin freight: good information (model numbers, dates, etc) but no prices.

good luck!

Hi hojack, thanks for the reply. Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to insult the forum! I just wasn't sure if there were other sites that I wasn't aware of that were more directed toward German trains etc. I'll take a peak at the link you added. Thanks.

And good point about the price/value of trains. It is a tough question to answer. When it comes down to it, they're worth whatever someone wants to pay for them!

I guess what I really would like to know is how many other people have ever seen that car in 1 gauge before. Anyone?

Great! Thanks guys. I'll check out Lankes and the Yahoo group. I wasn't aware of either of them. Historytoy.com seems to be a good reference too, but I couldn't find this car on there reaffirming how uncommon it must be.

I monitor a couple European Ebays and have compared prices with pieces on American Ebay and Liveauctioneers.com. I'm sometimes surprised of the low sale prices of some 1 gauge pieces here in the states. I'm okay with it though...1 gauge tin is mostly what I'm interested in collecting. I'm okay with paying less for it when it actually turns up...

I would have thought it to be a Gamages piece too, but didn't have a Gamages catalog to check. I really need to invest in some reference material. Thanks for checking through your books, Roland. I still haven't picked up any of the books you suggested to me before, and this is a good reminder that I must do it soon.

I'm interested to see what it fetches at this auction. It isn't the most exquisite looking or detailed car, but it's hard not to be attracted to those odd ball rarities....
