I have to travel to Detroit Hamtramck (pronounced Hamtramick) for work and the sky line is like something from war of the worlds.

It has improved over the years it used to be allot worse. I believe some of the largest abandoned warehouses in the US still stand here.

On a layout it would be cool to add maybe one or too, I think if I had a skyline of them I would just get depressed.

The railroad yard use to service these buildings and the yards albeit much smaller are still used for car storage.

Not sure what railroad was here on the north side of DeHam in the day?

I abandoned any thoughts of building one! Couldn't resist. Why not an abandoned warehouse? In this day and age, it's as common as a cold. I would imagine most cities have several. Our area of northeast PA is full of them. Many have become places of refuge for homeless folks. I would love to see examples.

Don

Not exactly the same thing, but I took a couple of batches of pictures of the demolition of a local theater.  I made two posts about it at a wargaming forum. If it's all right, I'll just paste those posts here.  Possible inspiration for folks.  One thing you see quite a bit in the city is industrial buildings that are only partially demolished.  Whether due to abandonment of the project, to preserve part for use, or to clear away part of a lot for sale, I'm not sure.

First Post:

An old theater is being torn down 2 blocks from my house so I hopped a fence and took some photos. I wanted to get in the building, but the sides were intact and there was a moat (exposed basement and water) blocking the way from the front as you can see in the pics. I'll probably go back tomorrow to try again. Meanwhile enjoy the post-apoc'ish goodness. Hopefully it will be of some inspiration. I surprised just how much rebar there is in busted up concrete.

All 23 are here…

…but here's a selection.

Second Post.

The demo has continued sporadically and I got back to take a second round of pictures as they reached the front of what was the stage, near the back of the building. I took alot of interior shots through doorways relying almost entirely on the flash to illuminate the darkness for scenes that I couldn't see until after I took the picture. However I chickened out at going up the stairs (which appear to go all the way to the roof) since the stairwell was pitch black and I hadn't brought a flashlight.

I also went around the side of the building to take some pictures of how vines had begun to overtake the walls. About twice as many pics in this one than the last, but I think you'll agree that they are better and worth a look

The new album is here:

Here's a few selections, Enjoy!

I'm thinking some WWII & war game terrain modelers would have some inspirational pieces

But that would be mixing work and pleasure in a bad way

I've worked on the old Packard plant covering for another mechanical company in an emergency. And I know the internals of the Highland Park Model T factory on Manchester St pretty well too. What's left of it anyhow. I watched a bunch of those disappear day by day. They tried turning some of it into some kind of shopping center.

I found an old Ford wrench atop an I beam in the clerestory ceiling of one building

If I did an abandonment, it would be the Michigan Central Station..in semi scale?

Here is another idea I used for the abandon building concept and i used it on the Mohawk Valley RR store layout that Jim Policastro and I built and was featured in OGR. It was a broken casting from Downtown Deco Kit that my friend Jack Smith sent me. and with a little detailing used as a scene to fill a corner on the RR.

Don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. Here's a boarded-up Warehouse that I built for my wargamign club.  Some of the details may be a bit innacurate, but it was an easy build. It's made from "Dust Tactics Warzone Tenement" kits with Histology Specimen embedding boxes for the metal board-up windows and various other bits and bobs attached.

Here's another one. This time I used the printed cardboard floor sections to board-up the windows.

I made a bunch of other buildings  based on the same kit, but many of them have the open-window disease that often afflicts buildings that wargamers will be placing miniatures inside.
