I'm working on an asphalt road on my N scale coffee table layout and wanted to see if anyone had any tips for the following when modeling asphalt roads. I figured N or O scale, the methods would be similar. My road was constructed with Woodland Scenics Smooth-it and coated with their asphalt Top Coat. So, my questions are:

What are your tips for weathering the asphalt surface?

What do you use for line stripping?

Any pictures would be helpful. Thanks.

Joe,

I have not weathered any road surfaces. For making the lines, I have used something called a "chalkboard and Lightboard Marker. The brand I found is called "Bistro Chalk Marker. They come in all colors. I have used the yellow and white colored ones for parking lot lines on some of my models. It is made by Uchida of America Corp. out of Torrence, California. I got them in a local stationary store and mainly used them to mark numbers on real storage tanks when I measure them.

For lines on O guage I use automotive pin stripe tape.  When I did N gauge I used a marker similar to what Alan Granziano mentioned.

I "weather" asphalt in either gauae either by mixing the paint a lighter shade, and/or washing it afterward with a mixture of mostly thinner with a trace of white and brown with a trace of purple.  (Yes, weathered asphalt seems to a bit of brown and purple in it too.).  In cases where it is close up to the edge of the layout and going to be seen in detail, I model patched areas with different, blacker color, and cracks (pencil), too.
