That is way many of us have switched to Kadee couplers. They look a LOT more "scale" between the freight cars, plus the cars are closer coupled.

And those wheel flanges!!!!????  OMG, they're WAY too small to hold that train of tank cars on the track !!!!  Especially those cars with placards showing red flames and/or skull-and-crossbones!!!  ....Hmmmm  

 

(Lessee, they must be doin' about 60 mph through here.  Maybe I shouldn't be first in line at this crossing....)

 

Yep, them flanges should be about 6" deep...like on MY trains!!!!
