Every example of the above (as well as the Atlas F upon which it is based) has shown the split axle gear. I have used NWSL's fine replacement sets, but it occurred that the only thing that needs to be replaced is the gear itself; the wheels and axles are fine.

I thought maybe I could purchase just the gear, but am finding the current Short Line website rather difficult to navigate. Is there another source (maybe 3D printed) available?

If someone is willing, I would be happy to send them an example of one of those gears; I have plenty of the split ones!  🙂

Hope everyone had a pleasant yesterday...

I am pretty sure the Red Caboose drives are just Weaver parts.  P&D Hobbies purchased the Weaver Drive tooling and still supplies replacement parts.  Here is the link for the Weaver replacement axle gears.  Now...  if you still have the original Red Caboose wheelsets, then it still might be worth changing to a new set of NWSL axle/gear/bearing wheelsets anyways since the new NWSL geared wheelsets have a much better wheel/flange profile and recently changed to a stainless steel material for the wheels which, in my opinion, does a much better staying clean vs. the original Weaver steel wheels.  The original steel wheels on my Weaver models that I have picked up over the years do not have the greatest 2-Rail wheel profile and a terrible machined surface finish that just loved to get caked in typical rail gunk.   It's up to you...

The original Red Caboose drive was identical to the drive in the Atlas F9 from the 80s.   I asked them about it, adn they insisted it was all new molds/design etc.    It looked identical to me.   I had a pair of the "bag-o-kit" when they sold off inventory.   They came without drives.   I had some old Atlas F9 chassis and the drives dropped in as a perfect fit.   The RC drive did have a pittman motor vs the unlabeled in the atlas unit.

P&D offered replacement drives based on the weaver parts.    They came later and were never offered from RC directly.   On the Atlas and RC drives, the axles have inside bearings and the sideframes are just along for appearance.    On the WEaver/P&D drive, the axles ride in the trucks (outside bearings) and the trucks are equalized.

I have seen NWSL offerings of replacement axles with gears for the Atlas/RC units.  I think they mentioned brass gears too, but not sure.    I have never seen the gears offered separately.    I have replaced F9 gears with gears from the Atlas plymouth switcher that I picked up cheap.   Actually I picked up 2 of the Atlas plymouths for the gears for about $20, and only got 2-3 good gears out of 6 axles in the 2 units.
