I have this RailKing GP-9 (PS2, 3V).  Last November, I replaced the batteries with a BCR2.  At that time, the engine functioned normally.

Recently, I put it on the track and received the "Engine Not On Track" message in the DCS remote.  I deleted the engine from the remote and added it back.  When I did that, the remote could see the GP-9 and it worked normally.  However, when I cut power to the layout and came back, same problem.  Anytime I want to use the GP-9, I have to delete the engine and add it back first.

I have some batteries laying around still.  So I took the BCR2 out of the GP-9 and put a battery back in it.  Now it works perfectly and remains available even after power is removed from the layout.

Does that definitely mean the BCR2 is bad?  Thanks for your help.

Most likely your BCR2 is bad. A good test is to power up the locomotive  so that you can hear it idle. Then cut the power to the track and the sounds should continue to play for about 8 to 10 seconds as the engine will complete a shutdown sequence. if the sound cuts before that finishes, the BCR (or battery) is not holding enough charge for the engine to complete shutdown tasks, one of which is to record the engine ID if it was newly assigned into the memory.

BCR2 are cheap to make yourself if you want. Here's a nice thread on the topic: https://ogrforum.com/...lone-circuit-diagram

Well, now I can't replicate the issue.  I put the BCR2 back in yesterday and it fired right up.  I tried it again this morning and this afternoon and it continues to work perfectly.  Perhaps a bad harness or the board battery control issue can be intermittent?  Otherwise, my only guess is maybe I didn't have a good connection before but now I do.  Until it happens again, I'll have to blame a loose connection.  Seems unlikely though with those little molex connectors.  Oh well.
