To appear in Run 313 of OGR: the B&M at Bellows Falls, Vt.
The Boston and Main RailRoad crossed the Connecticut River at Bellows Falls, Vermont, where a canal had been dug to bypass the falls on the Connecticut River allowing barge traffic to proceed upriver. The canal was completed in 1802, with a 52 foot change in water level elevation. This created the industrial town of Bellows Falls as an island between the canal and river, which thrived on the barge traffic and light water-powered industry, and then again, after the railroad came to town in 1849. Bellow’s Falls is a small town with population a bit more than 3000. The Rutland Railroad also connected at Bellows Falls. The town is now home to the Green Mountain Railroad, a small Class III freight railroad. -Ken Hoganson
