Hello! I just purchase a 3rd Rail Sunset Model Southern Pacific F Series 2-10-2 steam locomotive with TMCC. The instructions suggest removing the battery if loco is not in use for a long period of time. The loco is 20 years old and will be displayed. Can anyone tell me how to replace the battery and can I replace it with a BCR. Any help would appreciated. Thanks John

John, the battery is in the tender for that model. It's a bit tricky to crack the tender shell with a Vandy tender, you have to remove the narrow frame from the bottom to access the electronics and battery.
You can't use a standard BCR as it has no ability to recharge. However, there is a product that I developed that is specifically designed for TMCC/Legacy, it's the YLB - RailSounds Battery Replacement.
Thanks very much for the reply. I knew if anybody would know it would be you. Your very helpful. I reached out to Scott Mann and he wasn't sure, thought you removed the rear of the tender. You can't do that because of the hand rails and ladder. Can I get the battery by going to Henning's Trains? John
I just upgraded two of these from the old and dead TAS electronics to ERR TMCC, so I got a first hand look at the disassembly. Yes, Henning's has the batteries in stock.
Thanks again gunnrunnerjohn for your help, I just order the battery you suggested, now the fun part taking the tender apart and putting it back together the same way.
You gotta' have some fun in life.
If I am going to open up the tender would it be advisable to upgrade the system as you did and if so, is it a matter of just replacing the boards or more involved?
Way more involved! If it's running OK, I'd let sleeping dogs lie.
OK, the only reason I am replacing the battery is to make sure it is not leaking and won't leak in the future. Thanks again for your help
Yep, and note that if you run command and don't have an issue with the sound cutting out, you don't need a battery at all. The battery is only there to give the sound a few seconds of life when it isn't receiving power, it has nothing to do with moving the train.
Taking on the challenge to take the tender apart I think it would be best to put your battery design in and not have a problem.
Well, you should never have to do it again for the battery in that case.
You might consider adding a tender roller, that depends on if you see any issues with the locomotive on switches and/or crossovers. I add tender rollers to at least half of the brass that comes in for upgrades. This is a nice enhancement that really helps for reliable running.

I don't have a layout big enough to run a locomotive this size, I just don't want to worry about ruining the loco from the battery leaking, grow up in the 50's. I will kept the roller thing in mind if the day comes I do have a big layout. Thanks Again
If you aren't really running it, just leave the battery out. TMCC doesn't need it for command operation.
