Wow!  I didn't know anyone ran outside 3rd rail O gauge anymore.  This could be an

interesting OGR article if a club member wants to pull it together.

Just my opinion:  The club may have better luck recruiting new members if it converted to a modern control system.  The membership of my HO club increased after we converted to DCC.  I suspect that this topic has been debated by the membership.

I would try to visit if I wasn't on the West Coast.

This was the first large layout I visited when I was young  I still have the pamphlet with the trackplan  My wish was to someday create that trackplan in my house.  Right after visiting this club I remember buying a MR magazine to look for stuff I could add to the few sets I had already.  My first purchase was a #97 coal loader from Peter Bianco after getting his list in the mail.  He sent me a note to come visit him since we were nearly neighbors.  He was very surprised to see me, a 13 year old kid that had to have his father drive him to Pete's house.

I always wanted to join the Bay Ridge club when I got old enough but when I did get old enough I had too much 3 rail stuff to join a 2 rail club.  Maybe somebody from the club should detail what it takes to create an outside 3rd rail engine from what is available today

This layout has a large bit of model railroad history associated with it. Its an old school setup for sure but that's what makes it interesting.  OGR should do a story on it. You don't see layouts like this anymore and its HUGE!  This layout was there when I left Brooklyn in 1976 and remarkably its still there. This would have to be the oldest surviving large remaining O gauge layout in the five boroughs. It is probably one of the last outside three rail layouts in existence too. Fascinating!

I grew up on 96th & 3rd, about 5-6 blocks from there and remember it well! What memories!

I'm in the planning stages of building a new layout and I can't believe that there are not that many pictures of this layout. I googled and youtubed the heck out of it. The only pictures that are floating on the internet is the handful on their website and a 3 min video clip.

Has anyone been there in the last few years and if so, can you share any pictures?

Thanks in advance!

Cesar

I remember doing videos of this layout back when camcorders were full-size VHS units. Once I captured a rather gnarly derailment caused when a load of pulpwood slid off a bulkhead flatcar (the wood had shrank from when it was originally installed) and snagged a signal bridge, yanking it out by the roots as it stringlined the rest of the train in a tunnel.

The footage most likely resides in my VHS collection--one day I'll run across the tape and digitize it before my last VCR (a seldom-used Super VHS unit) gives out.

All the folks nearby who had no idea this club was there, sounds like an ideal opportunity to revitalize the membership  I see there has been some attempt to modernize things--if you look closely at the top photo you can see (what appears to be) a Williams Superliner peeking out from behind one of the buildings

This layout should be saved. The New York City Transit Authority headquarters is in Brooklyn. They would have the space and manpower to do it. I am going to suggest that to the club.

Great idea, MELGAR, but with the TA’s current financial woes, I unfortunately don’t see it happening. I’m not sure of the actual relationship with the MTA, but the Transit Museum is at Schermerhorn St. in downtown Brooklyn - that might be a good fit.

When I visited the layout all those years ago, I did not have the appreciation of layout building I currently have. I hope they can save the layout.

It is no small feat to relocate a layout of this size   Especially one that wasnt built modular   The center section of our club layout was relocated from another location and was a nightmare to reconstruct  It would have been easier and smarter just to start from scratch.  The manpower needed was three times what we had available.  If it were me I would just let the vultures descend on the existing layout and sell off what you can.  If you are being evicted let the apartment house management worry about disassembling whats left.

If any members are interested there are two O scale clubs nearby  I live in sStaten Island and it is worth the commute to either of these two   Of course my first choice would be my club in Paterson NJ  The NJ HiRailers.  I can offer any member of Bay  Ridge club free membership for the first year if joining our club  Its a 3 rail layout .   T  he other O scale club is 2 rail and located near the Meadowlands complex   The NY Society of Model Engineers which has a history dating back to the 1930's.  They own their own building and cant be evicted.

Here are some pics from one of my trips to the Bay Ridge club  These were taken in the 1970's  Vern and NAte were just constructing the El structure then
