I've been using this with good success. Seems to hold very well on the Ameri-Towne buildings and other plastics. Very easy to apply, has needle spout applicator. It is recommended you wash the pieces with a mild detergent before assembling to remove any left over manufacturing residue. I used no primer, not sure there is any for this glue?
Is this the kind of glue that apply after you have joined the pieces?
I use the time tested and reliable Testor's Plastic Model Cement on my Ameritowne
fronts. It worked well for me when I was a kid and if applied correctly it will still work great today.
My glue of choice the past few years is now "Gorilla" brand Super Glue.

First application was a brick wash with diluted latex paint to add mortar lines, this was as effective as using a primer, IMO. Once the wash was the way I wanted it, I continued with other acrylic paints, brush application. It took several applications of a very dilute latex paint for the mortar.
Then I started working the grey, brown, blue, or other trim colors.
Pictured paint work was done with each panel flat on the work bench. Interior window application installed and then final assembly.
Another paint project. I used a Rustoleum Camouflage flat green first, then the brick wash. After the wash was dry, a lot of time on window trim, and other detail.

I have done it both ways with good results on the Ameri-Towne buildings. I have clamped two pieces together and just run a line of it in the seam, worked very well. Also have applied it to small parts and stuck them on and held in place until it stuck (not too long) and that also worked well.
I got some of the Gorilla super glue that Hot Water recommended, but have not tried it yet. I have NOT had good luck with any other super glue in the past for much of anything, however some folks swear by it no matter what brand. I was hoping to have better luck with the Gorilla super glue, many other folks have suggested it to me as well.
I use a solvent type glue or 5 minute epoxy.
I prime all structures with Dupli-color gray primer sealer. Provides a GREAT base for ANY type paint. Check auto and big box stores.

HW, is that a gel type of super glue? (that doesn't set instantly)
what kind of plastic are these kits made from?

Yes. I believe it is also referred to as "gap filling".

I believe they are polystyrene, according to the web site description.
