Just found this out - the iconic Arrival/Departure board that graced the main area by Amtrak is coming down today.
It was a neat item in the station - the old board had the 'flipping' numbers/stations before it was updated to the current 'digital' version. Supposedly it being replaced by multiple LCD screens around the waiting area - supposedly to eliminate the congestion that occurs in the center of the area.

Oh man.... all the times I've stood there watching that board, analyzed the tracks already posted to try and guess which track I'm gonna need, take a best guess and hover near that track, wait for it to post and RUN!

I liked the fact the as the train names flipped through the list, the "TROOP TRAIN" option was still there, at least on the board that predated this one. Not sure if the one in the photo had that option.
Ah bummer, there was something about that sound as you are waiting for the train that I'll miss.
Did you ever think we would get nostalgic about Amtrak? Man, am I getting old! Are there still some of these "flippin' " train boards left. I haven't been to Philly in a while, is there still one there? These board are all part of the station experience.

Aah, the untold hours spent looking and listening to the little boards flip by. Like grains of sand through the hourglass, so are The Days of Our Lives... It's amazing that it lasted into the 21st Century.

Not going to be the same. At least I still have the LIRR "big board" .
Newark Penn station still has the digital version of the "flippers" complete with sound mounted on the wall over the entrance to the concourse from the waiting room. Plenty of the smaller video displays also.
Probably couldn't get parts or anyone with the smarts to keep it repaired.
That's like removing the manually updated stats on the green monster board in Fenway Park! Sacrilege! You just don't do it.
I hope the board has found a new home.
