For those who are not following my layout build in Track Plans and Layout Design I am building a 'modern' version of Bill's Oil Yard. In the Dec 1946 issue of MRR Frank Ellison designed and built Bill's Oil Yard for the town of Raymondale (named after his son). I figured since ol' Bill is still around (I will explain his secret for longevity in a later post) I would update his yard and move Bill to my town of Patterson.
Though the decals have yet to be made, Bill is expanding into propane along with his established motor/tractor oil, gasoline and diesel fuel for the local train yard along with .
The plastic portion of the build combines some standard product in my lie up - the small loading platform, propane tank and two vertical storage tanks. The base is hard board.
I am adding an office along with fencing around the perimeter of the base. The tanker truck is something I picked up at a swap meet. I added Santa Fe decals and sprayed the whole thing to get rid of the shine.
I will build the fence using Plastruct's chain link fence kit. The posts look like the standard TB-2 product which is plastic coated wire so is easy to bend at the top.
Bill's new office is a GC Laser card-stock kit that was very easy to put together. However I did not like the paper doors, windows and siding. I re-sized the building cutouts for a Grandt Line door and Tichy windows. I then stained some basswood strips - 1/32 x1/8 and 1/32 x 1/16. The 1/8 planks were glued face down while the 1/16 planks were glued side down to simulate board and batten siding. The roofing material comes with the kit. looks real good and is easy to install.
