I have a Lionel legacy B&A berkshire based on the original k line tooling and making a long story short it was realized that the whistle was left off of the original k line version and now the legacy version as well. I'm posting a link to photo of the prototype that was mentioned during the original discussion. It appears to show the whistle on the front of the smokebox just below the stack. Hot Water may remember. Could anyone here confirm this? If I wanted to add the whistle what brass detail would be correct, I've found a few single chime 6 chime etc, could anyone recommend a particular whistle from a particular brass detail manufacturer. Does a hole have to be drilled in the boiler? Is there any adhesive that could securely mount it to the side. Secondly, in the photo, is the whistle even mounted to the smokebox or is it attached to the pipe that is curving just below it?

The whistle on the prototype looks like a short 5 or 6 chime whistle. Note, however, that there is NO cable, cord or shaft to operate the whistle, thus it must have an air operated "on-off" valve, controlled by the Engineer. The SP had these same "air operated whistles" and all the Engineer has is a little brass lever to push down on.

I would suggest visiting the P&D Hobby Shop web site, as they are one of the nation's largest dealer of Precision Scale brass investment casting for O Scale. I would think they could get you an "air operated short chime whistle".

That is NOT a B&A Berkshire. Looks more like a B&M Berk, but the whistle may be in a completely different location.  I don't see that high pressure steam pipe running from the superheater header, up front, to the turret in the rear, as the B&A Berk has. Also notice the big Coffin Feedwater Heater, which overhangs the smoke box front, which is characteristic of the B&M Berks.

Thanks for the follow up Hot Water. Thanks for the tips Bob. Great photo Don. Heres a photo of the k line B&M berk matching Dons derailment photo, if thats the whistle by the stack, I wonder why k line neglected putting a whistle on the B&A version, too difficult with the added piping?

Very visible on the Santa Fe version, but is it tied into the piping or the smokebox.
