I have inherited my fathers trains from around 1939. I am trying to get the box couplers replaced, they are missing. I could use some help in getting it right. I brought them to a Lionel repair center, but was disappointed with their repair efforts.

  • How is the plate held in the slots of the box coupler?
  • What tool is used to attach the hook to the coupler?
  • Is a press used to attach the truck pivot stud (CP-58) to the truck?

I have added some pictures. They used a punch and a hammer to attach the truck pivot stud, but it just ended coming out. The "ring" was split in multiple parts, which resulted in weakness. In the picture below, it looks like the original was installed with a press.

For the plate and the hook, they used glue. They fell out as well. In the picture below, it looks like the original was attached with a V shaped chisel?

Is there any repair shops out there that can do the repair to make it like it was originally? I'm more than happy to send it to them for repair.

Thanks for any advise,

Michael

The lifting plate is held into the hood by deforming the zinc in a small area along on edge of the slot. The coupler hook and the pivot stud are installed with a hand operated press. In the past Hobby Horse made the presses and the tools. I do not know how active they are now. Jeff Kane, The Train Tender, is a Hobby Horse dealer. He is also the person you can talk on exactly how these repairs are done.  He may be at York, so give him a week to get home.
