I am continuing with my korber switch tower assembly.  I painted the the brick area a dark red, and then applied the mortar solution that korber sells.  The mortar effect is neat, but out of the jar it is too white and loud.  So the question is how to correct this?  I planed to strip it back off tonight and tint the white mortar solution with India ink until it is a dark grey.  Is this the right approach, as I would also like to do a dirty wash over the entire structure when complete and not sure if that will accomplish the same results in the end.

What is there best way to apply a dirty wash to tone down the colors and what is the wash made up of (mix of India ink and alcohol applied with a brush?)?

I am expecting an icing building from atlas to arrive  this week, and would like to also tone down the building with a wash approach, not sure if I need to paint it first an off white color or just use the plastic color of white with the wash?

Thanks,

Mike

There's really no need to strip the mortar. You can "paint" the entire structure with an alcohol/india ink mix and it really won't change the brick color very much, if at all. I start with a very small amount of india ink added to the alcohol, then brush a small area. It it's too light I add another drop or two of ink, then brush again. Repeat until you get the desired effect.

You'll be happier with the results if you wash, prime, and paint the ice house first before applying the alcohol/ink wash. Use cheap primer and paint, preferably flat. I use the Walmart dollar cans. Use the same method as above to make the dirty wash. Don't use the same batch you mixed for the switch tower except as perhaps a trial. It may be darker than you want to weather the ice house.

There are many different ways you can weather a building. Peeling paint, rotted wood, and on and on. Here's a picture of a Bar Mills kit I did using only alcohol/india ink and chalk on the roof to weather:
