Have not worked on my larger layout besides typing a wish list for it. Since I have student loans that need to be paid off and any money I earn is going to the loans. I  have chosen to build a simple testing layout. The layout is also going to be used to try out some ideas I have for my larger layout I want to build. It is just for testing small locomotives, and maybe a handcar if I can find a handcar that I like. However, I wanted to challenge myself to only use what I have on hand and around the house. I have some older track that I will clean up later this week. I have a Marx switch so I can run my Marx locomotives in the plan. The track plan is a very simple ovel and a spur track. Nothing to fancy but a layout anyone can build. I will document the progress of this project as I work on it this month.

Update: 12/8/2015 Finally after doing some thinking I have switched up the track plan a bit to offer some more room. Plus I have made the base larger so it would not be as small as I wanted but now there is more room for other stuff I wanted. I also added a fleece under the track so I don't have the track just on plywood I may still add some window and door stripping to act as padding under the track.

I wanted to build a simple little test layout for my N-scale trains and to give me something to run them on until I get around to finishing my larger layout. Just like you, I wanted to use the extras I had laying around. (Good luck with that.) My track plan is very similar to yours. When it was all done, it was a fully sceniced little railroad. I have a feeling you'll end up putting more into than you intend to right now. It'll be fun and you'll learn a lot. Good luck with yours.

Here's mine.

Prrhorseshoecurve, I've often wondered what brand track, crossovers, and switches a manufacturer uses to test a new product prior to it being put into production. Do they limit tryouts to using just their own brand of track, crossovers, and switches; or do they run their pre-production trains and cars on all brands of track, crossovers, and switches to check for full compatibility with brands other than their own?
