I was looking at those today, looks like it would be easy to whack out a PCB for those.
Some people love smoke, personally I'm ok with or without it. What I can tell you is that ditching ANY kind of mechanical smoke improves operating smoothness. If you can somehow remove that upper worm wheel / piston assembly and switch to a fan-driven unit, the loco will gain some low-speed performance. FWIW.

That piston unit is a current hog. Bin the smoke unit and piston, keep the gear and add a micro switch driven by 4 screws. The second bevel gear turns at the same speed as the drivers so easy to get four chuffs.
