Just ordered it yesterday so no photo yet, but I bought a MTH Premier New England Central GP40 PS3.0 from Beth at Public Track Delivery. Funny, being out in CA she often has the most items available for New England railroad lines. I'd love to have a CT source but as some old New England farmer would say, "can't git there from 'ere."
20-21206-1 | MTH ELECTRIC TRAINS (mthtrains.com)
Anyhow, stumbled across this engine as I'm starting to swap out fantasy Christmas trains for real life railroads. Earlier this year I bought a used conventional Weaver New England Central GP38-2 that has no sound, no lights, no command control and thought about doing (more likely someone else doing) an upgrade. As I was searching for the upgrade parts and instructions, a link showed up for MTH engine. Didn't even know it was a thing else I would have ordered it in 2020. Happy to find it. Now what to do. with the Weaver? Dummy engine?
More BCR's from GRJ.
Can't seem to keep them in stock, maybe it has something to do with the number of engines I am buying.
@Jesse ferguson- Nice tower. I'm impressed, Menards did a good job on this one.
@Tim Ring- looks like a well cared for 1615. Great score.

Bob,
In the words of Joe McDoakes, you gotta have it! 🤪
Sent Krieglok (Tom) this
And this
And poof “abracadabra”, he sent me back
Thanks, again, Tom, for another superlative effort! Terrific!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Mark - "fantastic" Tom certainly does super work. They look great.

Seems like the MTHRRC stuff goes for cheap on eBay, and, for that reason, they make excellent candidates for repainting. I’ve had the MTHRRC Crane Tender for years, and got the Crane off eBay for $20.
Nice
Mark, very nice, quite a beauty. Tom...kudos to you too.
I've been looking for a Milwaukee Road Hiawatha Steam engine for a while now. Thought I would have a chance at picking up a Lionel or an MTH for a manageable price today at the Stout auction.
Both already over the estimated prices with more bidding to go. I think I am going to be saving my pennies today for another time. The 4 wheeler regularly moved in excess of 100 mph between Chicago and Minneapolis and that was in the mid 1930s. I cannot imagine running any of my engines at a scale 100 mph - that's blazing fast.

Bob
Bcr's? You mean YLB's!
ScoutingDad,
Some of those engines went through the roof!
I was looking at the SW-1s they were off the map before the auction got to them! I did pick up a gaggle of Cabeese. I need a candidate for a repaint. Some are keepers. I also picked up a PRR MU set. They had the two boxes bundled so there’s four cars. Then I got some accessories for the train club.
@pennsyfan I've bought from Stout and Cabin and am fascinated at the "power" of live auctions. All it takes is 2 people wanting something to drive hammer prices pretty high. With fees the Lionel went for about its original retail price and the MTH not too far behind.
I did win an Atlas Santa Fe Dash 8 at a recent Cabin auction - still waiting for shipment.
Managed to find a new Lionel Chessie T1 in stock at Nicholas Smith. Got the diner to go with it. As usual when Lionel makes cars years later (these went with the Vision Gs4) the paint doesn't quite match. It's not bad though, the cars are a little brighter. Overall I'm happy. Ever since I saw the MPC version of this as a kid I've wanted one.
I did run the layout today but thought I’d post this clip.
After years of looking, I finally found a mint, never used, Texas Special E-7 set, 6-31755. With shipping, I actually paid less than MSRP.. The set comes in the largest set box I've ever seen from Lionel, it weighs a ton. Can't wait until I get a chance to run this set at our club.

Well folks, I am going to take a chance and show you something...JUST FOR FUN! It is nothing compared with the beautiful and really interesting stuff above. Please don't be insulted, this was a chance encounter and illustrates how us collectors can be tempted by the smallest of things. The assemblage below was found in a dusty basket at a local "garage" sale with no other train related items (believe me I looked!!) . It was priced at 50 cents for the entire basket and I simply could not resist. It will stay here at our summer place and be added to my front porch layout in the summer and under the tree at Holiday time.
So anyway, here is what may be the cheapest (and cheezyist) item on this thread. A plasticville outhouse, a single manual plastic crossing gate, one glow in the dark lamppost and a telephone pole. I am NOT claiming that its "Cool" this is just for laughs.
Sorry folks, this was just for some fun on a rainy morning. It just shows that train stuff can show up anywhere!
Best Wishes

Went to Charllotte NC with my family for vacation to see the Nascar Hall of Fame and while we were there I went to the Lionel mall store. First, let me say the Nascar Hall of Fame was fantastic and if you are a fan, I highly recommend it. Second, the people working at the Lionel mall store were fantastic. My boys and I were there for 2 plus hours and the people working there were so nice to talk with and they spent a lot of time talking trains and Nascar with us. Besides the bag full of Nascar diecast I bought for the boys, I got a few goodies for myself. I have two engines on pre order so I held off from buying a new engine, but that was really hard. I did get 3 cars off the discount table, a BN box car, a NY Central box car and a NY Central Pacemaker caboose. Then I got two items on my list, the flat car with hand car and one of the new Anheuser Busch box car. I also grabbed some people to windowshop outside my Lionelville Hobby store and some smoke fluid. The little hard car running on it's own around my town is so much fun. My son got a hot dog stand for his HO set.
Definitely worth the visit to the store if you are in the area.
Haven't posted for awhile, need to go back sometime and get pics of the stuff I have bought in the last few months lol, got busy working (briefly) on the real railroad before getting let go temporarily (going to be put in another position in another division when it opens, from a carman to a engineer!). Anyways, here's the most recent purchase, a 3454 automatic merchandise car, both with original box, and original (black) crates! When I get the time, the new engines and rolling stock from the rest of the year will be posted, and trust me there's plenty to share!

That is quite a nice example of that car. The silver paint did not hold up well on 99% of them. Quite a find...

That's what I thought too, even better that the owner was there and made me a better deal on it! Paid $40 for it and $10 for a tender that will substitute for my 1615's until I get off my lazy butt and do a shell swap on the tender lol!
I clicked on view reply on the email that showed Bill DeBrooke’s post regarding MTH mock-ups. 3 x I was taken to post number 1.
Has anyone else tried it?
JEP 120 from France ( C1951-2 ) clockwork with battery operated headlight .. Battery goes in tender ....
I bought this bench yesterday. I was told it was a train station bench from 1910...it is reversible...someone suggested it may be a trolley bench. Either way, I think it is a cool piece and will be in our dining room and possibly used at the large farm table I will be building. It is 8' 4" long.
@Roll the dice, Andy, that’s a great looking piece of furniture, looks to be in really nice condition and will be a good conversation piece when folks come to visit you and see your train layout. Thanks for posting, it’s definitely an antique. Good find. Happy Railroading Everyone

I’ve found when that happens, it means the post has been withdrawn or removed.
Nothing too spectacular, but I picked these up at the Edison show on Saturday.
Shockingly spent under $150. While I love the big tin station and Snoopy/Woodstock handcar, any of the modern era 450-style signal bridges are not very common at my local train shows, so this was a pleasant find.
This past month has been a little expensive. Besides the E 7 Texas Special set, I was also able to pick up another long sought-after MTH's LIRR Route to the Fair 5 car passenger set. Now I have to wait for Trainland to get in the Legacy LIRR C-Liner.
@Kent Locomotive Works - Wow that is really a super find. The 3454 dates from 1946-47, almost as old as me (1944)! That makes it 76 years old and the condition is really superb. To find it with box and original crates is really a home run! OBTW my collectors guide shows the car in that condition with a collectors value in excess of $100 ( and my guide is 10 years old) so you got a real bargin. @Steaming Jon- beautiful Bi-Centennial locomotive @roll the dice - that is a neat piece of furniture and will provide you with a great story to tell to your dinner guests. @Mikado 4501- the Marx freight station is great, a massive piece of high quality lithography. I have one as well...now your job is to find a place to put it on any size layout as its enormous! @FrankRazz - that is a really neat set of passenger cars, the NYC World's Fair was one of the places the wife and I visited just prior to our wedding (1966). @Fatman - another beautiful piece of tin plate. The JEP120 was a great find.
Super new items everyone. You are doing much better than me!! (see my post above)

Come next year, one of the Long Island hobby stores may have an exclusive RK-sized set of LIRR Fair cars.
I am taking delivery in the next week of a pair of new/old stock of Weaver Erie Lackawanna C-628's (#2500 & #2502). Although to my knowledge, Erie Lackawanna did not have C-628's their roster but they did have C-424's & C-425's. These 6 axle brutes will look so nice and will serve me well on the club layout.
I am still finalizing my freight consist which will be about 35-40 cars. I am looking for some freight cars in different road names that are colorful and that would have been seen on a 1960-1975 Erie Lackawanna manifest to enhance the brown, grey, black, and maroon colors of the many cars I already have. I am open to suggestions!

Bought this 2 days ago to add a little action and whimsy to the layout. It isn't in its final place as I'm still determining that. I would love to see what anyone else has of these small operating pieces.
I didn’t like the way they looked on the surface How could a scale size kid climb up to get on the pad? I cut a hole in the table and installed 4 toggle bolts to hold the cut piece. Then I turn the butterflies up till the accessories were flush with the table. I used blue tape and ground cover to blend it in
I recently w on an auction for a number of accessories. I’m thinking the scratch built restrooms will be replaced by the mini golf. There’s also Mr. Smitt and puddles. I may have room on the other side of the track where the trolley station is.
Gosh that Stockyard Express sure is a dangerous place. I thought I pulled off a feat last week getting in and out while only buying my two tickets for Clyde's open house raffle. But no, he calls later in the week asking if I still wanted a flat car with the Sears PUP trailers. Why yes I would like that even though I completely forgot about it, see the also recently delivered Kodak PUPs from Mr. Muffins as evidence of my growing obsession with the PUP trailers. But since I was there anyways, might as well grab that Fruit Growers Express reefer that I saw on my earlier visit but talked myself out of the first time.

Great guy and great place that Clyde has there .

I sent Krieglok (Tom) this
And he sent me back these!!!
Amazing talent and eye for detail. Once again, thank you, Tom.
I received these two cars in the last ten days. The Lionel N&W PS2 covered hopper was a eBay purchase courtesy of my daughter’s Father’s Day gift. The MTH PRR N6b I found on Trainz last week. I’m planning to preorder Lionel’s N6b to see what, if any, differences there are on these models.
This replica of the Federal Paperboard smokestack (Steubenville, OH) just arrived. I think Altoona Model Works did a fabulous job on it.

Great shares everyone!
Just picked up the Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer set 6-31936 off a local Facebook group. It wasn’t on my list but at only $50 (worth mentioning IMO) that’s perfect considering I wanted to pick up a CW-80 transformer anyways. Lady selling it didn’t know anything about them. Everything is there except 1 canister and one deck piece of the caboose. It’s all working too! Doesn’t look like too much run time on it. Another happy purchase!
Next purchase up was a few bridges last week. I was planning on doing the Nicholson/Tunkhannock Viaduct coming off the third layer and going onto the extension in the closet, but it would really have things crammed underneath. I opted out of that idea and grabbed some MTH single track arch and girder bridges in the rush color. Now to figure out what type of piers/supports I can use for the 18 inch height I need.

There are a few bridge builders that will make piers to any height.
My collection is complete! (or at least for this series)
Way back in March I won this boxcar during a live sales from NY Electric Trains:
Western Pacific Feather Route Classic Box Car (Orange Feather) (K-6456):
Then I saw there were other cars in this series:
Western Pacific Feather Route Classic Box Car (Yellow Feather) (K-6436):
Western Pacific Feather Route Classic Box Car (Blue Feather) (K-6466):
Western Pacific Feather Route Classic Box Car (Red Feather) (K-6481100):
Western Pacific Feather Route Classic Box Car (Green Feather) (K-648103):
And finally this one: Western Pacific Feather Route Classic Box Car (Purple Feather) (K-648105):
I know there are other variations of this theme, but as best as I can tell these 6 cars are all that was ever made with this exact scheme (but I may be wrong).

I just ordered some Dodge Power wagon pick up trucks from Menard's.
Nice looking trucks.
Well, I just bought some new 24 volt incandescent light bulbs for my Lionel Pullman cars on the Union Pacific Yellowstone Special (now you know where my handle comes from). I'd always thought that the stock 18v bulbs were too bright and those passenger silhouettes really showed up against the too bright interior. You can't see it very well in the photos. But those 24v bulbs dim the background light down a bit, so the interiors are not quite as bright as the other cars. After all, how else are the Pullman passengers going to get any sleep?
@DMASSO posted:I just ordered some Dodge Power wagon pick up trucks from Menard's.

Well I just made the mistake of looking at those…
I'm not sure if this qualifies as cool, it's Menard's stuff. I took advantage of the Menard's vehicles on sale for $4.99, less if you can use the coupon. I live in California and no Menard's here. So I ordered and received 3 Dodge vehicles including the US Forestry Power Wagon, which is COOL! Then I saw the Western Pacific Hoppers and thought I'd take a chance on them. I bought a 6 pack which works out to $18.50 for each hopper. Of course these prices do not reflect taxes and shipping charges.
For $4.99 ea. these are nice die-cast models.
Note, the hopper bodies are colored plastic and not painted!
Some of the individual numbers were a little crooked! These are decals, not painted. Perhaps the assembler had little too much rice wine at lunch!
The lids actually open! Nice touch.
Unfortunately, Mendards used to have steel trucks, now they are plastic! The couplers pay the price, they are very weak and with just a small consist release easily. I'm sure I can solve this issue, just haven't played around enough yet. At least they still have steel wheels and axles.
Future video of hoppers in action coming soon.
Wow, there’s so many neat purchases made recently, it indicates that times in the model railroad hobby are good, I added a new Cab 1L to my control system, although I love Cab 2 to operate my layout, Cab 1L’s work great to. I actually traded my Cab 1L Base, from the set, for the Cab 1L, for a few dollars more. Great deal, just getting prepared for the future. And at a recent train meet, I found an amusing metal sign, I love these little creative pictures. Happy Railroading Everyone
Have been focusing on scale Amtrak more heavily as of late. Also a have acquired some 57’ reefers
added to my K-line Amtrak Heritage passenger cars. Have everyone(except the observation- which doesn’t much interest me)
Amtrak heritage Sleeper
Amtrak Station by Menards
Most recentAmtrak addition as of today- 60’ MTH Amtrak ‘Expresstrak’ Mail Car or MAterial Handling Car(?)
which segues nicely into my 57’ reefers
These are both Lionel using former Weaver tooling. Western Fruit Express is a Lionscale and UPFE is part of a 2 pack
LCCA 2009 BNSF ice cold express
Lionel 2 pack: Pacific Fruit express SPFE. More detailed, and heavier than the first 2 cars posted- quality is same as the BNSF above
Also scored a white Conrail Reefer(by Weaver). Pretty much done with reefers. Here on out, in terms of modern trains, focusing mainly on Amtrak and the rest tinplate. Especially Remaining vigilant for reasonably priced MTH Amtrak 75’ auto carriers!

Scott- the QC on the Menards cars has not been great lately, but at the price point they are a good canvas to build on. Lot's of threads about the issues with the trucks and couplers. If you have a caliper, check the gauge on the wheels, many of them are off.
New trucks are an option as well.
The vehicles are sharp too.

Looking forward to seeing your completed project.

Now I wasn't looking for lab created dinosaurs but I wanted a command ship for my underwater research and salvage operations and this seemed like a good candidate. I had to move the superstructure as far forward as I could and eliminate most of the dino restraints to fit an array of mini subs and DSRVs.

This wasn't exactly cheap but I couldn't resist, a US Army railway map of France, and this one has parts of the lines coming out of the Normandy landing areas. Just got in the mail 15 minutes ago. It'll go with the other publications I have that are from this time and place.
Lee,
Very nice. They certainly had a lot of different zones.

Today I changed out a transformer for the passenger train mainline. I'd been using a CW80 for years. But when I began adding more lighted passenger cars to the Union Pacific Yellowstone Special train, the Lionel TMCC F3A balked and finally shut down. Time for a new transformer to handle the extra lighted cars.
So, on a small control panel that I didn't want to expand, I shoe-horned in a new Lionel 180-Watt Powerhouse and wired it directly to the track. I now have a constant 18 volts to the track and 180 watts. The UP YS train now races around the track effortlessly with as many lighted aluminum cars as I want on it. And it was a fairly inexpensive and simple upgrade.

I've had things accidentally fall into my cart at Menards several times. I swear their display shelving is automated, can tell when I'm rolling by, and applies a gentle nudge to get the item to fall into my basket.
Funny, none of them have ever seemed to miss. I've never yet found one on the floor, instead of in the cart, for instance.

I've been at the national narrow-gauge convention this week, trying to avoid the temping items in the vendor room...
HOWEVER, I couldn't resist this, from the dean of ET&WNC history, along with a sheet of O scale ET&WNC decals (because you never know when you might need more):
And I got these the following night. That's all I bought!
Today I received a Menards order consisting of six 1/48th scale vehicles and a circular saw. (With the circular saw, the handling and shipping charges were almost the same as for just the vehicles, so it's a win-win, I think.) One of the Power Wagons is already in use by the U.S. Forest Service, nimbly climbing a forested hill above town.
The other vehicles are pictured below. Dobie Spangler, of Dobie Spangler Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth, got permission from the Cutout Flats town council to display these beauties on Railroad Avenue just for the afternoon. They generated a lot of interest. But with more '58 models arriving weekly, Dobie is looking to deal! So come on down for the best prices around.
Picked up a few sets of RMT's new Beep People. The seated figures will be buying tickets soon for the next train out of town.
These are from the new production run that just arrived.
Picked up a NOS (from 2003!!!) Lionel 31712 Union Pacific 50th Anniversary Set from Grzyboski’s. Only had time to unpack and test the seven 15” passenger cars. I’m really getting kind of addicted to Lionel’s shorter cars from the early 2000’s. They are a nice length for my layout (14’x16’) as well as nicely finished (this set comes with detailed interiors). Interestingly, I used my VisionLine UP Big Boy with an auxiliary water tender as power for the test run and the color match between the tender and cars is oh so very close!!!
I posted a short video of the run over on the Passenger Train thread…
I've gone back and forth regarding a Schnabel car. Finally got one in Westinghouse from a Facebook group member. It was already 2-railed. I changed out the plastic Kadees for 740's. The car is longer than a full-length passenger car and it represents a "small" car at 14 axles. A forum member modeled BBCX 1000 in O scale (20 axles) but I never saw pictures of the finished model, which I believe was around 40" long.
Bob, looks like rush hour on the LIRR will take place! Those BEEPeople will fit the bill.

Typical for the LIRR is standing room only so I'm on the right path. I could have said track, but......🤪🤪🤪🤪
When my wife was working in the City, she took a train an hour earlier than necessary so she could get a seat into Penn Station. Some things never change.
Thanks Pierre.

Apples55: I too, like Lionel's 15" passenger cars from the early 2000s. Your UP 50th Anniversary set's passenger cars are similar to my 4-car set from 2001 and the supplemental 2-car set from 2002. These are also shown in the Passenger Car thread and in my 9/2/22 post in this thread. Only my diner does not have the station sounds and all of my cars do not have the full end vestibules. But I like the the 15-inchers' performance on 036 curves, even through an S curve at the higher speeds with no problems or derailments. 😉
Great buys everyone!
Those Menards vehicles look awesome! Apples55 you’re shopping right up the road from me, great store and people! I’m glad all of Bob’s little people got through customs with those tiny passports!
About two week ago I received a couple of Menards rolling stock. I got a Conrail boxcar, Conrail tanker, Conrail hopper, and the silver M&Ms boxcar.
The gentleman I ordered the Conrail from also included a Menards Morton Salt pickup for free since it was missing the plug. No complaints here!
I also recently picked up two more 022 switches. The lantern covers are missing the lenses, other then that they work great. I cleaned them up a little with some scotchbrite pads.

Wow, Joe - that is really weird. You sound exactly like the voices in my head.
Luckily I forgot to mention the 2-pack of LIRR 21” passenger cars that I also picked up (they are for the Long Island C-Liner I also ordered that was postponed till later this year)
Is there a 12-step program for train enthusiasts???

Vern;
I have O-72 and O-84 curves, so although I have (and like) the newer 21” cars, the 15” and 18” cars just look nicer to my eye, in spite of my love of big steamers!!! As for the station sounds, I couldn’t figure out how to operate it - apparently it is triggered by horn blasts of some key presses. That’s a problem for another day. As it stands, I am beginning to think that I’ve got too much sound on the layout

Impressive. Wish I had a layout like yours. To my mind's eye, 21" passenger cars in O scale are just huge. So I too, like the shorter lengths, as in the 15" ones. But I'm sure my 036 curves have a lot to do with that. I know what you mean about too much sound. Occasionally , I 'll just turn some of the sounds off for awhile.
I still think that Lionel's Union Pacific 50th Anniversary train is a beautiful set and you are lucky to have one. 😉
Picked up a few of the Lionel Cattle Corrals, made one working unit. Used some thin peel and stick felt furniture leg pads, cut them down to size for between the vibratory coil and corral. So far so good, still needs some cleaning up, will try some very thin sticky felt for underneath the cattle, scrub the ramps etc.
Yes, I just received my special order of the B&O 2-8-0 Consolation Steamer, it came in today. The gloss finish is so refreshing, looking like it just came out of the paint shops, new and ready for duty. Wow, it actually works right out of the box. This was ordered several months ago from Patrick’s Trains, Wheeling W. Virginia. Thank you Patrick. Here’s some pictures for your review. Happy Railroading Everyone
"I’ve got too much..." Who'da thunk Paul would ever utter these words in any context?
Larry that consolidation is so shiny looks like Williams made it.
@Coach Joe, wow, your observation may be more truth than fiction as this new Locomotive is glossy. I will be reading the manual and then will post a short video. Your newly acquired Menards cars are beautiful, I will be visiting Menards in Owensboro Ky., or Evansville Indiana soon as they make a lot of neat buildings and Train cars. @RSJB18 Bob, you have a cool selection of people, Beep people, really cool. @Donnie Kennedy, congratulations on acquiring the really prestigious New York Central Hudson, it’s beautiful. Great buys everyone.

The "Spirit of Williams Brass" lives on. I agree it looks awesome! Makes other engines look "dull".
Some stuff I scored at a recent Cabin Fever auction of MTH Warehouse items. Now, all but one of these pieces are run-of the mill starter-set cars, so nothing impressive about those. However, the cool part was in the speed at which CF got these out to me. Usually, the timeline goes like this:
Day 1: auction commences and concludes, after which the lots you've won are tallied up and you're e-mailed your invoice. Also Day 1: you recieve an email from their shipping partner allowing you to choose whether to pick up your items or have them shipped to you. Day 2: you'll get an email letting you know that your items are being readied for packing, and that the next message, sent via email and text message will allow you to pay for shipping/handling. Owing to the quantity of items in each auction (uaully around 600 lots), it can take awhile to get through them all. Day 5: Packing and shipping invoice. Assuming you pay the same day...Day 6: a tracking number is emailed and texted to you. Two days later (PA-NYC) I have the item in-hand.
In this case, the auction ended on Wedensday 8/31, and the items were on my doorstep Saturday 9/3. Impressive
Now, on to the meat of the delivery. I've always wondered how MTH assigned product numbers (if any) to the rolling stock included in their starter sets (since they occasionally get broken up). I don't have a definitive answer to that, but various Ebay sellers are using a scheme consisting of the set number plus a suffix indicating boxcar (B), tank car(T) and caboose (C), the typical RailKing set consist. I had to do a bit of hunting around to match up the cars with their respective sets and their numbers, so I'm posting these hoping it'll be useful to someone, whether here, or eventually when they show up in Google Images. Captions reference the image above :
30-4244-1B: C&O double-door boxcar from the Pennsylvania Steam Freight set (2017)
30-4245-1B: Northern Pacific double-door boxcar from the Southern Pacific Steam freight set (2017)
30-4247-1B: RailBox double-door boxcar from the BNSF Diesel Freight set (2018). This one took awhile to search, as there are no images of this car on Google Images or Ebay listings at the time I'm posting. I had to pore through images of RailKing sets till I found this car posed in the lineup in front of the set box.
30-4245-1C: Southern Pacific bay-window caboose from the Southern Pacific Steam freight set (2017)
30-4249-1C: Norfolk Southern bay-window caboose from the Norfolk Southern Diesel Freight Set (2019). This caboose and the previous one made me re-think the origins of the undecorated bay-window caboose I won in the 10/30/21 warehouse auction detailed in the post "A RailKing Caboose kit"). These two cabooses have nowhere near as many parts as the unassembled one, leading me to believe it is actually a Premier caboose.
20-98090: Northern Pacific drop-bottom gondola. A Premier piece that snuck into the lot of starter-set cars
Now we get to the real reason I bid on these lots...chrome-plated tank cars. There were three among the two lots I bid on. Also included in this group of photos is two more I got from Ebay, one I ran across (UP) while hunting for product number matches on Google Images, the other (ADM) I found on the seller's store after realizing he was dealing in set break-ups and may have others among his 4000-ish listings. The cars below only appear in starter sets to the best of my knowledge, and like the rest of the MTH cars in this post, were unboxed. I employed BCW-660 card boxes to store these 40'-ish cars without the excess room of the BCW-800s, and they even accomodate the smokestack on the cabooses, as well as the 10' width of the Premier gondola.
Also, I just noticed that the cars from steam headed sets have solid-bearing trucks, while the ones from diesel sets have roller-bearing trucks. Nice touch for a starter set
30-4244-1T: Gulf tanker from the Pennsylvania Steam Freight set (2017). Yes, it's missing a dome handrail. Might be able to find one on MTH parts someday. Lettering obscured in the reflection reads "GULF OIL COMPANY, PITTSBURGH, PA".
(Edit: 09/18/2022) While rummaging through my (still incomplete) collection records to figure out how many chrome tankers I already have I ran across a near-identical version of this car that appeared in the 2012 Rugged Rails catalog. The RR version has road number 10292 (this one is 10290) and is equipped with roller-bearing trucks.
30-4245-1T: Tidewater tanker, from the Southern Pacific Steam freight set (2017). "Tidewater" printed above the car number is obscured by the glare.
30-4248-1T: Archer Daniels Midland tanker. from the CSX Diesel Freight Set (2018). I ran across this one on Ebay after placing the NS car below on my watchlist, after realizing the seller was doing set break-ups and I looked through his selection of MTH tank cars.
30-4249-1T Norfolk Southern tank, from the Norfolk Southern Diesel Freight Set (2019).
30-4250-1T: Union Pacific tanker, part of the Union Pacific Diesel Freight Set (2019), and an Ebay purchase.
Now, what is the deal with all the chrome? Many years ago I decided to build a train comprised entirely of chrome-plated freight cars. Not sure what prompted this, it may have been a pair of prototypes being sold off by Williams at their York booth in 2007 that I picked up on a whim (they never went into production, and Williams had never been in the habit of keeping a production archive)
in any case, I had amassed a string of mostly tank cars done up like this, mostly from MTH, but also including four Lionel pieces (three of them MPC) as well as the aforementioned Williams samples. At first, I restricted my collecting to petroleum company roadnames, but as I came to the realization that was a pointless exercise being that any prototypicality went out the window with the chrome plating. I started snapping up all the shiny tankers I could find, a task that led me into a number of Cabin Fever auctions, Ebay, and finally one dealer in Greensburg, PA who had a whopping eight different examples of regular-production RK plated tankers, of which I placed an order for seven (leaving out the Coors Light for some reason). Those will be highlighted in another post since this one is long enough already.
As for the remaining chrome tankers I don't have? Among regular-issue cars, I'm aware of a Pennsylvania tanker (30-73221), a Killian's Irish Red (30-73239), Budweiser (30-73240), Harley Davidson (30-73220), Alaska (30-73222) and one Cargill car that is a starter-set exclusive, and has only one image on Google, part of a Kmart.com listing from this year that may well tie back to the same Ebay store where I got the UP and ADM cars, as the listing had the same wording as the dealer's own site). The Coors Light one? I'm wishy-washy on that, as it looks like it should go with the Silver Bullet set (which I have) even though it wouldn't look right hitched to it.
I don't yet have an accrurate count of how many cars this train will have when I get to run it, but it's likely at least 30 cars, and probaly more that that. I think I'll call it "Chromeapalooza" (because "King Chrome" is already taken, by both a rapper and a Canadian truck-parts store)
(Edit 09/16: ordered the Killian's, PRR and Alaska) (09/27: and now linked to the new photos)
(Edit 08/18/23) Discovered a triple-dome version of the Tidewater tanker. Investigating some leads
(Edit 09/10/23): Got the Tidewater, and two others

Received this a couple of days ago. Ordered the appropriate decals from K4 Decals this morning.
Will have to bone up on using "today's" decals. Have not declared since the 1950's.
A few years back MTH did sell these decorated for the road in question BUT got it wrong!
Have picked up a set of 6 plus four more hopper car from another set breaker up. And again not prototypically decorated MTH but do look good. Will fit in to what I have in Mind. Now have to figure how am I going to paint the loads to represent the materials in questions.
The related new engine should arrive soon!
Ron
An addendum to my previous post above--it took two hours to compile and when posted my browser hung on the 'Please wait..." screen for so long that it led me to think I'd lost the entire post when I didn't see it after refreshing Thank the like notification for pointing me to it the next day
In a more general train auction previous to this one (8/10) I gained a pair of K-Line aluminum tankers:
K6332-8016 Citgo tanker
K6332-8016 Same product number and UPC, but a different road number. I was outbid on a nearby lot that contained three of these tankers (with different road numbers) so I'll just have to be satisfied running them with the trio of BP tankers I got while K-Line was still in business.
Oh, and lastly, not all that glitters is gold. Sometimes it's a stack of chrome This order arrived during the week following the arrival of the cars in my previous post. The shop (Brady's Trains) does its shipping on Saturday owing to staffing, so having ordered on a Monday, I had that whole week plus the Labor Day weekend to be on pins and needles, but patience has its rewards
In this "display" from top to bottom:
In case you're curious, the labels in my previous post were made up to stick on the ends of the BCW boxes, with some additional info to add when I get around to adding these cars to my inventory. They're printed on a new version of the Post-it Note called "Super Sticky Full Stick Notes" that have adhesive across the entire note, save for a 3/8" strip at the bottom. This allows them to run through an (inkjet) printer stuck to a sheet of paper. Printer manufacturer probably would deem it a 'not recommended' tactic, but as long as the labels don't come loose as they loop around to the printhead, it shouldn't be any riskier than regular inkjet labels.
How did I get the text to line up? I stuck eight of these post-its to a sheet of paper and scanned it. Using an image editor I loaded up the scanned Post-its and then made a separate layer* of the image (so I could hide it later), then superimposed text atop the notes. Two sets of data will fit on each 2x2" note so I spaced each block of text so they could be cut apart into a pair of labels. Once done I hid the layer with the scanned notes so only the text would print, and ran the paper back through the printer with the Post-Its still attached.
For subsequent labels, I printed the initial scan so I could position a new set of Post-Its exactly where the previous ones were, and changed the text for the new data. Since each block of text added becomes an independent layer, I can hide those layers with the un-needed text so rather than having to print all 16 label slots I can print only what I need in a given session.

* for the uninitiated, layers in an image editor like Photoshop, PhotoPea (a browser-based Photoshop clone), or Krita, work like a stack of animation cels, with a different part of the overall image occupying each transparent sheet. Everything on a layer can be altered independently of graphics appearing on any other layer.
Don’t get too tanked over these great finds!
I’ve been patiently waiting to get these geeps out of the boxes. I finally cleared the tracks today after I completed my clearance testing.
As the first picture attests I certainly don’t need more PRR geeps. But I felt it was a community service to keep these excellent condition engines from the scrapper. The restored 2028 is really well done and the 8357/58 are L/N but have been run. All in all it was a bargain.

@Yellowstone Special, Vern, I must admit, that’s a beautiful MTH refrigerated Sante Fe/ REA express car, nicely finished. I would like one of those. Thanks for showing us this cool car. Happy Railroading Everyone

Mark, they are “sort of” affixed. The crates have six of the vertical supports that fit into holes in the deck. They used heat to affix them on the underside. After removing the frame (easy) I was able to just gently pry the load off. After adding weight I used canopy glue to hold them down.

Pete, Those are great cars. They have very nice details. I have a AHM consist of boxcars, flats, and gondolas. They were made by Rivarossi, and as I remember were from the same molds as the Lionel Standard 0 cars. I replaced the trucks with Standard O trucks.

I too have some of these cars, mostly through a collection purchase by a club a friend of mine is a member of. After filling in some gaps via Ebay, I have a more-or less complete set of AHM O scale (and older Atlas, via the same channels), three boxcars, four reefers, and three each of the gondola and flatcars. Being that I intend to keep these together (perhaps with along with the Atlas cars, depending on their performance), I elected to skip changing out the trucks. But I did locate and secure enough conversion couplers (a single Ebay seller has them) to replace the funky horn-hook ones that were the default on AHM, so at least they'll mate with typical 3-rail couplers, even though they're fixed like the 1970's Atlas ones.

(maybe I'll call it the "Plastic Wheel Parade")
@RailRide I just put all mine on the track; a few less than what you listed.
Just back into the hobby and today I was a kid at Christmas Time !!!
Recently bought a 1533WS freight set. Just the lok, tender and rolling stock. Very clean set, a little dusty from storage. This set has a gray 3562-25 (operating barrel car) instead of the usual yellow. In doing some research the yellow is more common but some sets had the gray version.

Really? 😉 That’s awesome, Larry and nice going. Looking forward to seeing photos after you get it.

The Standard O trucks put those cars kinda high up in the air
Here's my lil' collection of AHM: The boxes when new had a tear-off panel over the clear window. Some of my acquisitions still have that panel intact, so I elected to leave it in place. Some of these boxes (like the UP gondola) are slated for repairs with cloth tape and PVA glue like that used on books, to make them a little sturdier, and I'll either re-glue or replace the windows with clear acetate. I also made up a styrofoam insert to straighten the warped cardboard of the more worn boxes, so I can gently moisten them with a clothes steamer. Hopefully they should hold their corrected shape once dry.
(The PFE dupe is thanks to being a little quick on the Ebay trigger--I didn't check to see if I had that one since the very-good-condition box had my attention. I'll have to own up to that one )
At least one of these cars were fitted with Atlas O couplers (which won't grab a 'claw') and perhaps one other was fitted with Kadees. My plan is to retrofit all of these with the AHM conversion couplers shown below. They give you the equvalent of the 1970's Atlas couplers, which aside from being non-operating, will mate with typical 3-rail couplers.

Yes the gons really stand out. Back in the day I was looking for a way to get a freight train at low cost. At $3 a pop these were golden.
After all it is Hirail! 😂

Hey, thank you Scott. I didn’t notice that the right side ladder on this one has one bottom rung missing and another one damaged, until after I’d posted the photos. Oh well, this one was bought used. 🤷♂️
Great finds and additions to everyones collections! Thanks for sharing them!
Over the past week or so I have added a few different items from a tanker to pillars, even candy!
First up is a CSX tanker from Menards.
Next up is another addition to my never ending candy collection. Here is my new set of 4 Hershey’s Reese’s Pieces Hauling Cars. Great set of Ores! The Reese’s Pieces candy loads are awesome!
Following that candy excitement are some MTH stone pillars.
Final 3 items I picked up over this past weekend came from the Hamburg Dutch Train Meet. My first time attending and it was a nice sized show. I grabbed 2 Lehigh Valley hoppers and an Erie Lackawanna ore car. I’m thinking the ore car is custom because I’m not finding any information on it.
My company has offices in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Baltimore, Richmond, and Washington DC. I have been on the hunt for rolling stock to represent each office. A few months ago I snapped up the Ann Arbor Hopper, its fantastic. It's my first Lionel Center Flow hopper and detail is great. At the same time I found this weaver RF&P, I "upgraded it" with wood decking on the inside and swapped out the trucks for sprung MTH ones. (Tiny Tims Trains just north of Richmond Va.) A few weeks ago I was at the Long Island Railroad museum, to just "look around" and there unloved on a dusty shelf was my DTI high roof box car! I have tons of B&O rolling stock, so now just to find the Washington Terminal RS-1 and my set will be complete! York I am looking at you. I am a happy fellow. (last photo is my office two shelf display made of foam board)
Found another prewar Scale Craft-ish K4. Pretty rough but well weighted , no zinc pest, and no failed legacy or ps3 boards lol. Lol no tires to rot and fall off either.
Dennis,
Good find!
Tom
Dennis - "hats off" to you as you are obviously braver than I in your taking on what appear to be very complex projects. Both locomotives really look cool for sure and I wish you great luck in getting them back together. It is way beyond my skill level!!

Well guys, not nearly as difficult as those projects Dennis pictured, I did purchase this sheet metal clockwork loco very recently (just came in mail yesterday)...the seller listed it in the thread of "Marx " trains for sale , but this loco is not Marx. I have also compared it to my Girard Model Works "Joy Line" locos (that sort of became Marx in 1935) and its not one of those either. SO --- WHAT IS IT? My current guess is Hafner but all I have is one very small picture from the TCA Western Div info sheet on Hafner...so its a guess. It is very complete, works well, its a "bell ringer" and has a battery powered headlight - although at the moment it has no bulb. Its very well made and has a mechanical brake. So I am open to all thoughts of folks who think they have an idea of who made this little guy (he is 6" long from back of cab to tip of cow catcher) and 0 gauge (works on my Lionel track). I will probably post these pictures in the tinplate album to get the views from that thread as well.
Here is the side view, one of my "Hafner" indications are the open spoke vice stamped drive wheels and the real stirrup foot steps to the cab. In the Model Works locos, the wheels were stamped and the cab steps just simulated as part of the under cab stamping. The key is fixed into the motor.
Here is the boiler front and to me, the red boiler front piece seems original. There is no indication of later painting it appears to be originally enameled red and the tabs holding it do not appear to have been opened . The hole is for the bulb to the battery powered headlight.
The cab rear. You can see the bell and ringer just below the cab floor and the "T" shaped handle that represents the motor brake for winding. You can see that originally most of the engine was shiny black.
Well there is my "find" for the moment. Any thoughts about the manufacturer are welcome. If it is Hafner, it would be from the 1920's is my guess but again, that is just a guess.
Best wishes

Ulus Kerman: Nice Youtube video of Union Pacific action. I spotted Milwaukee Road passenger cars in UP livery as well as a UP express reefer, which I recently acquired for my UP passenger train. Awesome trains!
I have a Lionel UP CA-4 caboose that I had purchased a set of Tomar marker lights for and hand them installed by an Authorized Lionel Service Station tech., after I'd drilled the holes for them. Anyway, they functioned for about a year, then went out. CA-4s are a PITA to disassemble, then reassemble, so I decided to get a new caboose with the marker lights.
I wanted a yellow UP caboose to match my UP GP7 with marker lights, but as you may know, Lionel did not bother to equip its CA-4 cabooses with marker lights. So, I settled for a new Lionel woodside caboose with them and although it's a bit of a mismatch with a diesel, I guess it still looks pretty good.

Glade you enjoyed the video, and your caboose looks good

Picked up five (5) Maine Central boxcars in various paint schemes from Trainz to go with my new Lionel Legacy 2-8-0 consolidation. I also have a new MEC caboose on pre-order from the Lionel catalogue.
Picked up this Woodland Scenics building, Emilio's Ristorante Italiano. I'm posting some photos in, "What did you do on your layout today", with work in progress.

If I didn’t enjoy making my own buildings, these Woodland Scenics are the best I’ve seen. A bit pricey also.

Atlas O Central of Georgia 50-footer. I wanted on of these for a long time. I finally got one last week. Here's a little info from the Central of Georgia historical society.
1) The famous "blimp" scheme was only used on 50' boxcars.
2) This paint scheme was always black car with aluminum oval. Car ends were black. The lettering on the aluminum oval was black and the lettering on the black background was aluminum. Cars 5500-5999 had aluminum roofs, while 1500-1999, 4999, and 6217 all had black roofs. The monogram had a yellow background with black lettering. (The purple/silver and boxcar red/silver model versions are not prototypical.)
3) There were three lots of these cars, all built by Pullman Standard. CG 5500-5999 were built in 1954. CG 1500-1999 were built in 1956. CG 4999 and 6217 were built in 1958, apparently as replacements for wrecked cars.
I don't believe that any of these cars were ever repainted in the blimp scheme by the CofGa shops. I do have a painting diagram dated May 30, 1958, which shows the application of the standard boxcar red "The Right Way" scheme on these cars, but I've never seen a photo of one that was repainted that way. Several were eventually repainted into the post-merger scheme with block type Central of Georgia lettering.

I wonder if Lionel can anymore since they modified the tooling to change the headlight?
Bought this used KLine DL&W Hudson (3238-1152S)…but it really wasn’t my fault ! Ed Boyle made me do it ! In Run 295 (Dec 2017) he did a nice write up on this engine and I’ve wanted one since. But since I have a 1-steam engine rule, my 6-18003 DL&W Northern is being sold to make room for the Hudson.
Is the one engine rule additive or multiplicative? Seems to me 1 times 1 still equals 1 so you really only have one. Can't sell one you do not have.

Is that New Math or Common Core??????
bob - its make the numbers tell what you want them to.
OK - I am sort of in the category of "bought this for fun, not sure its cool!" Anyway, went to a train show over the weekend and after looking at all the stuff I couldn't afford, I went looking under the tables for stuff to augment my summer layout and /or which would interest my 7 year old nephew who visits and plays.
So strictly for the summer layout...a Bachmann crossing gate with box. I estimate this is 1950's some time as the address does not have a "zip" code which means its prior at least to 1971, so its been around awhile. A plastic car by Thomas, I would place the styling of the car at late 40's. Our family '48 Pontiac sort of looked like this.
Now for the fun items for sure...a Lionel tool shed, all nicely detailed and painted and a "bag" of farm animals both were $1 each. The animals include 4 pigs, 5 cows, 1 lamb, 1 turkey, 1 dog, 1 cat, 2 horses, 4 chickens and 2 ducks - now that's a haul for a 1$ bag!!
Well that's my haul from the show...these items will add some "scenery" to my summer layout and give my nephew some items to move around or maybe put in the gondola for a train ride.

My question is Doesn’t a single steam engine get lonely?
LOL I don't have to worry about it, my CEO Calculator already says I have too much!
Ok @Yellowstone Special, my MTH gleaming chrome Sante Fe REA Refrigerated Express car arrived today, (LegacyStation) it’s not connected to the train but soon will be. I like it. I also like your Union Pacific car, and I did see a B&O blue car near Pittsburgh, C. T. McCormick Hardware, I’ll be calling them…. Nicely made rolling stock by MTH. Happy Railroading Everyone
Wow Larry! She’s a beaut! I like the plating on this one and your photos are terrific. Glad you got one and nice going. 👍
Last week picked up a Lionel 1950 Golden Anniversary set (no boxes). I would call the cars excellent condition and the engines only very good (stains, weak paint in some places, some mold release present) but with very nice decals. There were a few other pieces (132 station, 364 log loader in box, 3472 milk car, 3461 lumber car). The owner asked for $250 for everything and I think I can get about $50 for the extra pieces so $200 for the Anniversary set seemed like a good price. I cleaned the engines up a bit and the set runs great!
While I was working on installing my new Emilio's Ristorante Italiano building posted earlier in this thread https://ogrforum.com/...8#164024807503081338 , the following showed up at my door! Emilio's is in the background with the outdoor tables and the green window awnings.
To make a long story short, I have been looking for the Lionel Legacy Southern Pacific F7 Black Widow AA (6-38757) set from the 2013 catalog for a couple of years now with now luck! I found this Lionel LionChief Plus 2.0 SP Black Widow F3 AA (2034130) from the 2020 catalog at Trainworld, and on sale! I decided I would try it out knowing that LionChief is pretty low end compared to Legacy and also semi scale. But Beggers can't be choosers as the saying goes, so I bit the bullet and went for it. At least now I have SP Black Widows on my layout.
Here's the Black Widow parked next to my Western Pacific Legacy F7 ABA set, and even with the Black Widow further back than the Legacy F7, you can see the difference. But, once the F3 Black Widows are running they look pretty good. Here's a video below pulling my K-Line not so prototypical SP Daylight passenger coaches. The consist still looks pretty with Black Widows pulling the Daylight paint scheme.
The quilling horn is a little sick sounding, but it only seems to be a problem when I'm running it with a CAB2 in TMCC mode. It much prefers to be run with the Lionel LionChief App connected with Bluetooth.
Happy Railroading and Happy Friday!!!
Quite a departure for me ... it runs on elecktrickery.... ( It will never catch on ..)

Nice deal, you could probably get more than 50 for the extras. That is a desirable set.

I like those engines, Scott. They make a beautiful train.
I received earlier this week the last stout auction winnings.
The MTH 5 unit twin stack set.
This will go great with my other two mth twin stack sets [SP yeller & BN green] and my lonely Atlas O Conrail Twin stack set.

They look brand new great find. I don't do modern trains, but I like stack trains when their multicolored.
WOW! This is an UNDERSTATEMENT for this car! No wonder why this car has become hard to find!
Although a faux car for the ATSF prototype, it looks good. The pictures DONT really show the graphical impact of this car. Unfortunately the simulated preforated sides did a number on the blue logo application. The car still looks eye catching especially when surrounded by a sea of ttx yellow from previous runs.
I also picked up these two while im at it.

Thanks Vern, I'm getting used to it. It does look pretty good on the layout, I must admit.
Well I posted this on the "Marx Trains" thread but thought It might also be of interest here. I found this Marx mechanical set at a local train show last weekend. It dates from 1952 and it appeared in the 1952 Sears Christmas Wishbook for the amazing price of $4.98. What I found so fascinating was the condition of the set. The cardboard sleeves separating the pieces were still present, the track is shiny, and the trains look as thought they have never been out of the box, at least not very often.
Here is the box cover, colorful and a little worn but not too bad for 70 years old!
The contents of the box inside, including the original cardboard sleeves to keep the items from scratching each other.
The locomotive and tender. A clockwork, WHISTLING Mercury locomotive and a "grey band" NYC tender
Side view of the locomotive and tender
The rolling stock from the set. The wheels on these don't even show any significant usage.
Oh and almost best of all...the ORIGINAL KEY was still in the box.
Well its not the most rare set but I thought the condition at its age warranted me posting it for everyone to have a look.
Best Wishes
Don

Hey Marty, I used to tell my people I would be in training for a couple days .
Wow, @MartyE, now that’s dedication, special Tee shirts for attending York, and you’ve chosen a very cool design, however I do not see “2022” on the shirts? I like the slogan “Traincation,” and the steam locomotive. I suspect this will allow you to wear these shirts to future York meets. I will miss the LUG meet this year but I’m hoping you will give a detailed update after York. Thank you for sharing and showing your new creative tee shirt to us here on the forum. No date so I and others can wear it every year. No LUG meeting this year. Without Lionel it makes it difficult.
