When I sell stuff and its motorized if new in box I give owner the option of me putting wires to it to see it functions correctly or taking it as new in box. used I will test before listing and again before shipping making sure all works that is suppose to.

Operating car I test to make sure it operates correctly before listing and again before shipping. this way I feel confident I am giving the next person what they want and I take at least 6 pics top, bottom, both sides, front, and rear. so you see what your getting. and invite you to ask for more pics and what angle

I have purchase most of my stuff on the bay...and have had the worst problems with merchandise from one so-called reputable seller who does a lot of business on ebay...the last purchase I made from them was a "like new" ps-1 big boy...which showed up with sand doors cracked and pieces falling off, the number board on the pilot broken off and stuck in the little pocket with the smoke fluid, and the front wheels and axle of the front truck loose rattling around in the box. I called, I emailed,  I threatened to call them out on this forum...and all I ended up getting was ignored and avoided. I have seen their name on this post, in fact...but I would not call them reputable and will not do business with them again. The point is I guess that any time you buy something sight unseen it is a risk. I'd say 80% of the time I've been satisfied, 10% not, and figured the rest was educational experience.

A few months ago I bought a Lionel A-B-B-A set from a the OGR Forum's For Sale or Trade site.  I did have some problems with one of the powered units and when I explained it to the seller he offere to buy them back at the price I paid.  I explained that I really wanted to keep the units and planned to send them  to Lionel for repair.  The seller made  a generous offer to pay for the repairs.  I thanked him and said that we could split the repair cost and I would pay for the shipping & insurance.

His concern was genuine.  His offers were more than fare and I have never even met this person.

Off the forum I have mentioned this experience to my train buddies and they were most impressed.  He is a real stand-up guy.  He knows who he is.  For the most part I would not hesitate to buy anything from him or any fellow forum member via the forums Sell/Trade board.  We have something special going on here and I hope it last for a long long time.

I have recently contacted Lionel and they told me the repairs are finished and that my units would be sent back as soon as a second tech verifies the repairs.

I hope to see them next week.

Happy Railroading.

PS - I won't mention his name here... but if you see something on the Sale/Trade listed by marker you need not worry.

I would suggest what many others here have said. Ask questions about the seller with others that are involved in the hobby and like to buy what you do. Ask them for their feedback and experience. Any purchase should be checked by the buyer and get a guarantee. Do those basic things and you will usually get a good deal and frankly most sellers want the buyer to be happy. We have too small a community to have them have customers that are otherwise.
