This week has been our annual "running of the trains" in an attempt to keep them charged up, running smoth, or identify those reassigned to maintenance.

One of the observations my son & I made was that the trains that had cab lighting looked great and those that did not, well....didn't look as good.

A good example of this would be the Mth Aerotrain cab.   Just way too dark.

Can someone explain how to install lighting in the cab, where to get parts, and what the downside might be?

thanks

Fully Assembled LEDs for Plug and Play use

Yes! You can Connect these LEDs to any track power source:

these solid non-flashing LEDs will look great with 7-19 Volts of power input.

Guaranteed to stay lit for 2 years with free replacement

Thousands and thousands of these LEDs are now in use, on all types of track and transformer power supplies.

Our LED Lights can be used for Locomotive Headlights, Passenger Car Lights, Ditch Lights, Yard Lights, Building Lights, and much more. Low heat super bright LEDs only draw a tiny amount of power: 20milliamps.

Choose your colors, we have warm white, cool white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

Deciding which white to get?

Forum sponsor Henning's Trains selling a ready-to-go LED lighting kit for passenger cars that I think is the easiest/fastest solution to lighting an Aerotrain cab.

http://store03.prostores.com/s...Passenger-Car/Detail

Because the Aerotrain cab is relatively long, I don't think a single bulb or LED would look right.  The above LED kit uses so-called LED strips which come in 2" sections each with 3 LEDs on it.  The LEDs are of the surface-mount style which means they are short/flat and have a wide illumination angle.  I'd mount a 2" strip on the ceiling of the cab (the strips have adhesive backing).

As I understand it, you can buy the LED lighting kit a la carte since obviously you don't need all the LEDs for an 18" passenger car.  Note that the board has a brightness adjustment which some/most of the off-the-shelf individual LED assemblies do not offer.  In my opinion, cab lighting requires a just-right brightness to look realistic.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and want to mess with component-level assembly the circuit used on the LED kit has been discussed on OGR many times.

One benefit of going with LED strips is there a many here on the forum who have used them and will provide you prompt and knowledgeable assistance.

You're also the problem solver! There must be something that will give these LEDs an incandescent look. I was hoping kapton tape would do it, but MEH, not so much.

I've attached the instructions for the lighting regulator module to this post, that should give you an idea of what wiring is like.  It's just track power on the input, and the LED's on the output.

My solution to getting closer to the incandescent look is to use either warm white or yellow LED's.  I then take sandpaper and sand the exterior to defuse the light from the LED.  It does a pretty good job, but I can't say it's truly the incandescent look.
