Between the CAB2 and now the CAB1L it seems like you can find the original CAB1 used for ~$100 without much difficulty and used 6-24130 Powermasters also seem to be pretty common. Right now I have one conventional locomotive (soon to be 2), a PS3 locomotive and a PS1 locomotive. How much better (or worse!) would these run using a CAB1 and 6-24130 Powermaster? Any major downsides to be aware of? Eventually I'd convert these locomotives to TMCC using ERR boards or sell them and get TMCC versions.

I used a CAB-1, PowerMaster, and MTH Z750 with my MTH Railking RS3, NW2, Atlas/MTH GP9 hybrid, and Willaims E7 before getting DCS and they ran fine.  They ran a bit smoother and slower (easier to control) than using the Z750 control knob alone, but with DCS and TMCC I got better slow speed (finer speed steps) control.

Now the 3 units are sitting in a box.

I am not sure there is an advantage to using a cab1/Powermaster if you have a modern transformer but there is if you have only Post War transformers. Most of them start out at around 6 volts. The powermaster starts at zero volts plus will give both whistle and bell control without a separate bell control.

Sounds good. Slow speed control is important since I have several operating accessories where it's important to have the car lined up just right (the horse corral being a good example). Right now I have a CW-80 and a MTH 100 watt brick/Z Controller powering two different blocks. Like to use the CW-80 as a dedicated accessory controller and the MTH to provide track power.

Lionel has an adapter plug that fits into the Power Master and has a regular terminal end for transformers.  It also has an inline fuse.   G
