My Big Boy won't make clearances in this tunnel, so the easiest way for me to fix it is to melt some of this foam down with a hot knife. I painted it with 2 coats of Rustoleum though. Will my hot knife idea catch fire?
I would check the MDSD specification for the Rustoleum product, they list the flammability properties and flashpoint on their website by product type. I would also try to contact a product specialist at Rustoleum with this concern, may sure that you have the temperature range for your hot knife for this contact.
It will catch fire easily when wet or maybe for a day after being painted on or sprayed. Then its is fairly benign - it will burn, like anything else, say in a housefire, but its not especially prone to catching fire once its real dried.
MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) list the flash point at 200 degrees. Kind of a generic sheet. As Lee mentioned wet paint and dry paint are two different things. As solvents evaporate, paint dries, hazard issues change. The other consideration as with the melting plastic, when using a hot knife, is the fumes generated when burned.
