This video is from my YT Channel, RS-1 running with MTH - DCS Remote.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y1V-15_mG8

I would also like to run my MTH locos the correct way in Conventional Mode. Page 113 of the MTH Operator's Manual / Fifth Edition. Gives the procedures, but this process calls for using the DCS Remote Control.

Lionel has a different definition for conventional operations. "Turn track power off. The powered locomotive will respond to the transformer's Throttle, direction, horn and bell buttons".

The Question: Will a MTH Locomotive respond to the transformer's, throttle, direction, horn and bell buttons? I have not tried this process, because I do not want to damage the electronics in a MTH / RailKing Locomotive.

Thanks / Gary - Cheers from The Detroit and Mackinac Railway

I'm sorry, but I am don't understand. How does this fix the problem. Does it had to go through a process with the DCS remote?

You need to do a reset in conventional; 1 whistle and 5 bells with a confirmation double whistle at the end, if successful. Sounds like it is locked in neutral.  Some PS3 models will do this, on occasion when going from DCS to conventional. But, some MTH locos do not like the CW-80 transformer, so you may not be able to reset it or operate it with the CW-80.  Not sure about the K-Line transformer.  You need a pure sign wave transformer with whistle & bell buttons.

Gary,  You can run any MTH DCS engine on a conventional transformer the same way you run a Lionel conventional engine.  With the added benefit that with a bell and whistle button you can fire couplers, activate PFA, Lock in a direction, and with PS-3 actually turn on or off a light function.

Shack, as Jon stated.  Either the conventional reset or the unlock feature both in the directions that came with your engine.  You jut need to get use to the timing of the W and B buttons.  G

What on earth does this have to do with getting this guys train running?

I'd first ditch the CW80 and see if it takes a reset in conventional. You will not be able to reset it with the CW80 as the buttons have a lag time and don't respond quick enough to reset the MTH electronics. I've had PS3 engines do weird things going from DCS to Conventional without a reset (such as being locked in neutral, forward, or reverse). A reset cleared it right up.

I have tried running my MTH 30-42221 set w/ Protosound 3.0 using the conventional mode and it performs fine, at times, however I have seen it not operate also. Using an old Power Chief xfmr but have used a CW80 and saw not problem.

Thinking forward on this matter, I was running an old MTH with 1.0 using a Lionel 1033 when that machine just stopped and now it won't do anything, except, lights on and one happy "Ding"!. I checked out the xfmr and found it to be registering 13 volts even with the throttle set to 0.

So, guess anything is possible, huh?

This is why I run in conventional mode and put my MTH PS-3.0 on separate tracks to run by itself with the power supply (Z-500) being that which came with that particular unit.

So one can surmise that nothing is set in stone with all these types of electronics, it seems.
