I have a set of CN Alcos ABA (orange nose, black/white diagonal stripe) ; Were they used for freight, passenger, or both? I have a lot of CN freight but haven't seen anything passenger other than Canadian Pacific and I believed they were F-3. Any comments appreciated. Thanks Phil

CN used their FPA4's primarily for passenger service:

CN FPA-4

but also for freight service (original paint job.  FA1 with FPB-A trailing)

CN FA Freight Service

CP never had any F3's.  CP used FP7's and FP9's for either service.

This takes me back.   The location near the Toronto lake shore and south of the rial yards still afforded a decent view of the towns major architecture.   That's the Royal York Hotel sticking out of the A units roof.  Today, the location is occupied by an expressway eyesore and condo towers.  Other than passenger service out of Union Station ( just in front of the hotel ), freight activity, trackage and engine facilities have been removed from the downtown area.  It becomes increasingly difficult to spot the Royal York on the modern city skyline.

The other pic is taken in the socialists republic of Montreal.

Hey Thanks Bruce, Glad it brought you back. Would have liked to seen it all. I collect MPC era and have most of the pieces Lionel produced in that era for the CN Line, except I think they may have produced a couple more pieces un-cataloged and released only up there north the border. I've seen the Budd RDC cars but don't think Lionel produced any other passenger cars. Hence, the reason for my initial post. Thanks again.

It appears the CN had some FPAs (with steam generators for passenger service) and more numerous FA-1s and FA-2s (for freight). The models from Lionel and MTH are FAs, although on a layout you could use them for both freight and passenger service if you wanted to and almost noone would know the difference. The picture below is of a FA-2 in freight service.
