Sounds like your focus mechanism is sticking. Persistence in trying to focus between close and far may free it up. Probably not worth the repair cost as good used ones are less than $50. Mine died years ago - corrupted images, but it was just OK while it worked and was quickly surpassed by newer cameras. Smart phones are the new pocketable camera and the image quality is superior to the SD600. A bonus is their great depth of field in layout closeup photos. Their weakness is telephoto.
You've probably looked at this already - but there's magnified closeup shooting mode. Any chance you somehow set it to that? Page 34 in the manual discusses it:
