My K-Line (K3688-4449) SP GS-4 Daylight would not run. As I was checking the tender wiring harnesses, I discovered a chaff wire. It appears when this wire shorted to ground, it took out two components. One appears to be a capacitor (yellow) the other a diode (black cylinder).  I need help in identifying these parts, so I can replace them.  The yellow part has a stamped number of I0N390K  (underneath that is JVR). The black cylinder stamped numbers are 15KE33CA (underneath DC). What are these parts? What is their purpose?  I happened to have a spare harness and slaved it in, the engine came to life and worked as advertised. The harnesses only consist of plug ends and these two components, so I am convinced no boards were damaged. I would appreciate some details on these parts, so I can make the harness as good as new.

mov's are good but normally only a one time shot they catch the spike or short and then self destruct.they are typically used a lot in powered terminal strips that have say 6     110 vac outlets. on powers stripts and there is a light to let you know if they have failed!

the tvs diodes are used more frequently these days and just fail typically as mentioned above generally short after catching spike rms voltage

First off...Thanks all for the help identifying the parts and outstanding background information.

The chaffed wire was on the tender wiring harness. I do not recall what board or plug it was connected to. (I wrote it down and have it near the engine, so I know how to reinstall the harness.. just to prevent the dreaded old man's forgetful syndrome.)  When I refer to the tender harness, I am referring to the six pin harness that makes a connection to the steam engine. I do not think this was added on, rather it was  a factory install.  I completely removed this chaffed harness and swapped it with a harness from another K-Line locomotive (one which I owned from day one) in order to test the dead engine and it's boards. The new harness also had the diode and MOV attached. I doubt if those two items were aftermarket add-ons. With the slaved harness, everything worked as advertised. As for someone being in the dead engine prior to me, that is highly possible, as I found evidence of electrical tape covering slices vice heat shrink tubing. I have removed and replaced those as well.

As a precaution, I am replacing both parts.
