I bought a set of Penn Central Champ decals off of ebay. Thank goodness I only paid 3.00 with shipping. I have heard stories of Champ decals becoming brittle with age. Never had a problem til today. I cut out my decal, dropped it in water, turned away to clean up the work table, turned around 10 seconds later to find the decal in 1000 pieces. What happened? I am guessing this is a age problem. Is it light or humidity that breaks these down. When you buy these is there a way to know the age of these? These were sealed in the original Champ envelope. This ebay seller has a lot of decals for sale. I have checked the feedback and discovered that negatives are because of not combining shipping and other issues like that, but none say anything about defective decal issues. So is this just the luck of the draw? Anyone out there got any Penn Central cylindrical hopper decals for sale. Let me know as I would like to finish this freight car.

I've gotten several sets that did the same thing. The only thing I've found that will hold the decal together is coat it with decal film or spray them with clear coat but then decal setting solutions are useless and the decal wont shrink down and hug the details leaving you with a rookie looking decal job. The best thing to do when they're in this shape is to throw them in the trash and hope you can find more.
