I have a bunch of weaver rolling stock that I would like to upgrade to die cast trucks. Has anyone used the die cast trucks but kept the plastic couplers? I figure by doing this I can save a lot of money because i want to change over 7 cars and the difference in price for new truck with couplers is about $7 per set.

I dont think that you'd have a problem doing that. The diecast couplers are held on just like the plastic ones (screwed between the car and the truck) and they're located on the truck the same way (the semi-circular protrusions). Also, they appear to be identical in dimension (I have some cars with metal ones and some with plastic ones).
You're going to have to call weaver and order the trucks anyways, just ask them to confirm it, they're quite helpful on the phone.
Yes they seem to be the same my older fleet of Weaver and New cars seem to have the same design just metal instead of plastic trucks and couplers seem to be the same.
Wish they could get them to roll a lot better. MTH/ Lionel / Atlas you put the new cars on a track that you think is level and they start to roll away so free rolling. Weaver cars do not!
Was thinking of tinkering to see if bearings could be fitted Tichy bearings for the like to try to get them to roll better.
All the other trucks Atlas/Lionel and MTH are much higher so if you put them on the Weaver cars they sit to high unless you cut down the bolsters.
If I could find a lower truck profile I would be replacing a lot of the trucks on Weaver cars.
Actually, I like Weaver's plastic trucks just fine (very free-rolling); it's the plastic
couplers that don't work well. Not because they are plastic; some of Lionel's
recent low-end plastic couplers work well. The Weaver design and "spring" is just awful. I like Weaver a lot, and when they switched to d/c trucks/couplers I was pleased...
until I discovered that their "thumbtack" was so low that it often will not go over a Lionel
uncoupling section w/o shorting.
So, my Weaver rolling stock purchases are rare.
The best 3-rail freight trucks, like some other things, were/are K-line's. Fortunately
RMT has or uses that tooling. Best new-type release tab design, so long as you pop off that
"air line" that is common these days. C'mon - it's a big, honking O-gauge coupler;
it cannot look "realistic".

I have upgraded several Weaver cars over the years. The plastic couplers work fine, however at the club I like to run long consists so I rubber band the couplers shut. work just fine

I have one Weaver plastic truck you can have. It would be up to you to tell me how to get it to you.
The latest weaver trucks rids of those ugly pressed Wheels and puts in place the heavier Die cast cintered wheelsets for more much needed weight!
