All,
I am looking for suggestions on modifying my Christmas layout for Halloween.  Essentially, I am looking for ideas on what to do for a white based layout to temporarily change it to a fall theme.  The layout base is 4" thick styrofoam painted pure white with an accent that resembles a snowy rock face.  The best thing I can think of is some sort of green covering, but that seems lame to me.  I am trying to make something that I can setup now and just convert it back to my Christmas layout around Thanksgiving without repainting.  The photo below is what I am working with.  The goal would be the same track layout but to hide all the white.  Any suggestions besides something like felt or artificial turf?

Why not get a 1" thick sheet of foam that you can paint with greens and/or browns and place on top of the white 4" base foam.  Secure it with magnets embedded in the edge and corners.  You can then change with the seasons.

Hi Carey

The original poster   glued two 2" foam 4x8 sheets of rigid foam .  Then Painted the base White ,  He did a great job.

I am like you I want a Fall to Winter layout !    Like the original poster ,  I plan to glue two sheets of rigid foam together .   I will paint one side Green & one side White .  the 4 " edge will get painted Black.

The track will not be attached to the foam .  I may Lionel track sometimes & HO Track the other times .

The buildings will not be glued either .

For You , you could paint the green side Brown or Gray for your Halloween side .  Then for Christmas you could sprinkle the white powder Woodland Scenics stuff on the White side.

For Me For Fall , I would use Fall colored Trees .   For Me The White side , I would do the same as yours , Plus use White colored trees for Winter/Christmas .

So Carey , let me know some of your ideas .  Please

Bill in Wauwatosa .

This is what I’ve come up with so far. My seasonal layout is a petite size, just 4x6 ft. At Walmart today, I found yardage of an inexpensive orange sheer sparkle fabric  to place on the bare plywood. Hubby Tom has a leftover piece of 2” purple foam that can be a base for a building. Most of the pieces on the table came from two different dollar stores and Walgreens. The vintage style wooden sign came from Michaels.  I will have a 42 curve Standard Gauge loop running the perimeter and an 36 curve O Gauge loop inside it. This plywood is two 4x3 ft pieces that were hanging around. One is painted white. Don’t like it with the sheer fabric. Will get a full size piece of plywood to use instead. Several Lemax and Dept 56 Halloween items are on their way here.

I may get red or green of the same sparkle fabric if they have it for a Christmas version.

The white looks good! Don’t repaint it! You could get some black sheer with silver spider web fabric to simply drape over the white base. I saw this kind of fabric at Walmart today- 10/20/2020.
