Chuffing sounds when smoke is turned on

I have a Proto-2 20-3293 UP 4-12-2 9000 class steam engine from 2007. When stopped and the smoke is on there is a chuffing sound. When the smoke is turned off there is no chuffing sound when stopped. What is required to fix this? Thanks Bruce

Did you try a factory reset? The other fix is a 10K resistor in the tach line, but that was for PS-2 5V boards, not 3V. I would suspect a bad tach reader, some feedback in the tach line return (orange wire). G
