Cloud Stencils

No two clouds are alike, so freehand with an airbrush may give better results than trying to airbrush a stencil.  Maybe look at some pictures of clouds and freehand a rough pencil outline and go over it with your airbrush.

They also have other stencils with which to create backgrounds....hills, mountains, city skyline, etc..

The cloud stencils that Don mentions above are very good. There are several units so you can make a variety of clouds. I borrowed my friends and made new ones out of very thin hard board which is different from the original card stock material.

My sweetheart at work.  Clouds on the long wall were done with a crumpled  paper towel. Right wall is wall paper.

My advice is unless you are modeling an approaching thunderstorm or dreary overcast skies,go easy on the clouds. A good background will make or break a layout. A few years back while recovering from surgery,I painted a few background panels for a friend's HO layout. This was the first time I had picked up a paint brush in 35+ years. Note how the sky darkens as you move up from the horizon. I plan to take the same minimalistic approach on the backgrounds for my layout presently under construction.
