I'd like to publicly thank Erick, Jeff MacDonald, Ed Miller, Dave Stewart, and talented A&O crew for inviting this easterner to see some fabulous O scale modeling.  My only regret was that we didn't have more time to get to know each other better and talk about approaches to the hobby -  I had to shorten the visit to drive up to ski country ahead of a good size winter storm. Hopefully some of the guys will stop by and see my railroad when near Williamsburg and give me some additional pointers.  I should add that I made initial contact with the group after seeing Eric's posts on the forum - thanks OGR!

Ian, it is true that the A&O Forums are down; temporarily.  The website host is doing some maintenance work.

ARRSD90, That's not a CB (but it sure does look like one!).  I don't know exactly what it is but it is part of the ambient room sound for that part of the layout.  Bob Sobol has built a sound system for that area to produce "mood music" thunderstorm sounds.  The sound is tied into a lighting effect that matches lighting to the thunder.  The whole scene is isolated from the rest of the layout.  We call this area the rain room.  The lights are dimmer, and the scenery will reflect a wet atmosphere.

Eriks video shows two layouts. The first one, without scenery (yet) is David Stewart's A&O. The second one is Jeff MacDonald's beautifully-detailed layout.

The "CB radio" in the A&O rain room is just an inexpensive class D stereo power amplifier. Not visible behind that sits a thunderstorm controller board that synchronizes 9 camera flash LEDs to an hour long MP3 thunderstorm recording.
