1. I recently purchased a used Chesapeake & Ohio MTH F3 B unit 20-2055-3 (powered, but manufactured in 1998) on eBay and it runs fine in conventional mode. My layout is Atlas track powered by MTH Z4000 and MTH Track Interface unit. Though my other MTH engines have been entered with no problem, I am unable to enter the B unit into my MTH remote as the readout says "cannot fine engine". However, as stated above the unit runs fine when using the transformer power handle - much like running conventional.
2. I assume the motors in the old B unit are actually MTH and have not been changed out for something else. Thus, if all motors are MTH, is it possible that an older powered B unit needs vto be connected to a new powered A unit in order to register on the MTH remote? Or, should I avoid connecting the two at all in order to avoid the risk of causing electrical problems in both units?
3. I am thinking of purchasing a new MTH #20-20941-1 F3 Powered A Unit Diesel w/Proto-Sound 3.0 and wonder if I can safely connect the two units - above mentioned B unit (1998 manufactured and is in the MTH 1998 vol 2 catalog) with the new MTH A unit (2018 manufacture). The diesel power questions center on my assumption that I will need four motors (2 in the new A unit and 2 in the old B unit) to run a long string of 14 K Line C&O Heavy weight passengers cars plus four C&O K line express box cars.
Would the two units (separated by significant distance in dates of manufacture) need to be lashed up or would they operate in unison much as my MTH E-8 A-B-A units? Also, should I not consider using the old B unit as all?
thanks,
