I recently purchased a set of Conrail Dash 8 locomotives, Powered and Dummy. I would like to add a 3rd different locomotive to this consist and my question is, What other class of diesel would typically have been seen MU'ed with a Dash 8? Would an AC6000 or possibly a SD60 ever run with these?

If you are sticking w/ just Conrail engines, you can go w/ SD60M(I), SD70, SD60, SD50, SD40-2 or even some 4 axle power - GP40-2, GP38-2.

Conrail never owned any AC6000s   The latest GE model on the roster when they were merged was the 8-40CW. What era are you trying to stick with?  Are they widecab Dash-8s?

The ones I have are the Dash-8 Narrow Nose. MTH Premiere.

I would like to stick with another Conrail Unit. Going for that look of all are the same but one is different. Would like them to be "on the rails from the same era" as Dave put it.. Might go with a CSX if I stumble across one I like. Christopher, I will check out your site.

Hi, Greg.

Assuming you're interested in a powered unit, as recommended above, to insure maximum capability between units, another MTH locomotive would be your best bet. That said, keeping in mind your desire for another Conrail unit, here are your most logical choices given the era of CR's C40-8s which were delivered beginning in 1989.

20-2578-1...SD50 (This is the 6707 wearing the Desert Storm Yellow Ribbon):

A non-powered unit, the 6700 wearing the "Quality" scheme was catalogued as a companion unit for the 6707 listed above:

Probably worthy of mention are a couple of RailKing Scale models which were formerly considered top of the line locomotives but later placed in the RK line as they do not include some of the features of subsequent Premier models. That said, they are scale sized and I still consider them excellent models as I own examples of each.

30-2783-1...SD60 (Road number 6854):

I believe the C30-7 was just released and is equipped with Proto-Sound 3.0.

Other than the non-powered SD50 painted in the "Quality" scheme which was issued in conjunction with the "Desert Storm" 6707, which was one of a kind, I've chosen to not list accompanying non-powered models for the units listed above although they were offered.

I hope you find this information useful.

The wide cab GEs began arriving in 1990. The first group consisting of units 6050-6099 were delivered with, what was up to that point, the standard Conrail herald. The Quality scheme made its debut when the 6100 was delivered in 1991.

I recall the paint GE was using at the time did not hold up as well as it did on EMD units delivered during the same time frame. Quite a few of the GEs started to look ratty fairly quickly and some units which were delivered in the old scheme got repainted in the new image by the railroad.
