I just started this project for my friend Brian. It is 8' long which is not even close to scale but will have to do. I will be using RK containers to help with the size.

Where on earth are you going to put this?
Nice. It should be impressive with all the colorful containers.
Dave, I didnt know you were for hire?
Very nice DAVE. Maybe in the off season you can convert it into a Crab Boat and lend it to the GUYZ on Deadliest Catch?
OK, I'll bite. Just how long would it be in scale then?
I think someone built a portion of one on their RR because of it's real size?
Someone's lucky to have you as a friend. I'm betting it will be another great build. Please share as it comes along.
Great looking shop there too!
Dave,
It looks like a great start. What material did you use to make the hull and how did you do it ?

Alan Graziano had done an Edmund Fitzgerald ore carrier on the Great Lakes. Link this thread
Dave,
Really nice work. Is the hull all foam?
The base is foam and will be covered with Dura-Glass and Rage Gold body filler. I am thinking of making the tower out of masonite. I might see if Andre will cut it out for me. I have to decide on a design.
Alan, I will be looking at some of your projects for inspiration.
The real ones are BIG!
Dave
The model in the above pic will fit in one corner of my layout. LOL Yeah right. LOL Dave, looks like you are off to a good start. Let us know when you r finished.
Rick
I need to get one of those for my layout. First I better look for a much bigger house. Impressive model though.
David nice work on your project. That is a bit more my size.
How are you cutting the foam?
He must have a large layout. Hope he post pictures of his layout pond? Is the ship RC controlled?

Been thinking about a similar project...Would lover to see a "how to thread" or at least lots of update photos!
Is that Mike Reagan?
Nice job! No worries on scale; you're about bang-on for a multi-purpose container feeder ship like this one.
I did a half one once in HO for the LHS. Russ

boy, that sure looks bigger? like G scale? not that it matters that much. Way too big for many of us to consider.
David,
I used a styrene deck of .060". This was glued to the hull that was constructed of masonite. I was provided the hulls to work with by my customer. Foam makes good sense for the hull since it would be easy to sculp into the required shape. If you want more details on constructing the super structure send me a message and I will be happy to help.

That's O scale??? OMG! At least I can run my DDA40X around my living room, I wouldn't even be able to fit that in my pool. And I've got a pretty big pool. Wow! Gives a whole new perspective to the word 'Big'.
big train posted:It's supposedly an O scale Maersk E class ship
Color me skeptical. The prototypes of those shipping containers are 8.5' high and are stacked about 9 high above the deck. So, the stack would be around 19" high in O scale. If that is true, then that guy looks kind of short.
Impressive model, but I'm pretty sure it ain't O scale.
Assuming the guy in the pic is 6' tall +/- the box frames underneath the model seem to be 4' in length each , 16 ' plus over hang at each end, you could calculate from there. I was in the SeaLand offices in Port Newark on business in the late 90s and I believe they had at least one very large model of a container ship on display, the offices had some great mural size pictures of these ships at sea in some rough conditions.

Wow....I think I am gonna cry that is so beautiful....I need a much, much bigger house....or a smalller house and a larger shop...wonder how much it would cost to lease a warehouse for my layout....hmmmmm....

It looks like a Maersk "Triple-E", (two blue funnels further aft) which is about 1300' long, and counting 40' containers gets to about 1000'. The floor length looks about 25-30', so O-scale compatible, wouldn't you say? A fancy storage shelf for all your empty Lionel boxes maybe?
Dave wonderful work. I look froward to your updates on this project.
Great project!! This is going to be awesome to watch the progress on.
This can be a good money making business. Can be international shipping scale as well.
"build a model Airbus A320. then your Tom Hanks action figure could move seamlessly from trains (Polar Express) to ships (Captain Phillips) to planes (Captain Sullenberger)."
Just as long as "Castaway" doesn't figure into the equation.
Dave, That looks great!!! Your definition of "left the project here" is where most of us would be proud to have finished!! Very impressive!!
DAve
OUTSTANDING!! Now to create the Harbor big enough to hold this ship
Steve
http://www.profmodels.com/en/#udforte It is 1/48 scale
It looks like it might be a bit larger than O Scale, BUT the Maersk "E" class ships are 1302' long and have a beam of 184'
which in "American O" gauge of 1:48 would be 27.125 ' long and 3.833' wide
in "European O" gauge of 1:43 would be 29.93' long and 4.22' wide
Either of which is beyond an "Impressive Model", and neither of which is likely to ever fit in a layout OR budget that I am likely to have.
