Working slowly up the line did the switches today. I also lightened up the rock walls some and added weathering to the ballasted sections that are complete. Looks like I missed a rail but ran out of paint.

The weathered rails look MUCH better!  Here is a tip for your ballasting process:

1) Visit Home Depot, or other "big box" supply store, and get a 50 pound bag of cheap sand-box play sand. Dry the sand in 3 pound coffee cans, or 5 gallon buckets, until it is completely dry.

2) Apply the sand in the format you desire the ballast to look like, being sure not to apply too thick a layer of sand.

3) Spread a thin layer of your ballast of choice making sure to cover the sand.

4) Moisten the ballast/sand with CHEAP rubbing alcohol, using a pipette.

5) Using a different pipette, flood the ballasted areas with Matte Medium, thinned to the consistency of whole milk. Allow 24 hours to dry.

Thanks, I do use a filler under the ballast and it sits on top of 1/4 inch foam to raise it up. I will try thinning my glue more and weathering the rails was a good suggestion.
