So I'm building a "Structure on fire" and have Evans LED "fire kit" in it.  I found a Lionel fan driven smoke unit for only $15.  BUT, upon putting it in and hooking up power, its more like a jet engine!  Ha ha.  It puts out a serious jet plume of smoke rocketing up out of the roof!   So..... can anyone help with a cheap control for this?  Maybe a resistor or reostat?  And if you do have a suggestion please be specific because I'm not an electrical guy.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

The smoke unit has a 5V regulator on the board to run the fan.  You can break one lead to the fan and add one or more diodes in series to drop the voltage and run the fan slower.  You can also run it on lower voltage for the smoke element to lower the amount of smoke it can generate.  A combination of these things should allow you to control the smoke output to your liking.
