Hi all,

I am new to layout building. 99% of my stuff is postwar Lionel. I just got some Odyssey engines and have been warned not to run with my old ZW unless I purchase new lionel equipment to prevent circuit damage to them in case of a short. Please advise;

-what new Lionel equipment do I need to prevent ODYSSEY engine damage using my old ZW?

- what do I sacrifice with the Qdyssey engine system if I run all the layout in 100% conventional mode vs. Legacy?Odyssey mode ?

  Much thanks, Jerry

Jerome,

I am a member of a club that maintains a 65 year old model train exhibit for the City of Rochester, NY.  2 of our 4 layouts are using post-war ZWs as a power source (the other 2 layouts use Z4000s).  We have had a number of circuit boards in newer equipment destroyed because the ZW transformers didn't shut down fast enough.

One of our club members researched the problem and came up with a great solution.  We have purchased and installed PowerShield X Series solid state circuit breakers between all our transformers and their track feeds.  These things kill the power to the track almost instantly, yet don't shut down the transformer.  And they don't allow power back to the track until the short is corrected.  If you're interested, here is link where you  can get detailed information and also purchase them.

Here is another link that will take you directly to the 3-Rail boards;

This link should give you more details about the boards, and near the top of the description is a link to click on called "Buy DCC Specialties Products Here" that will get you prices.  You will need 2 PSX-1AC per ZW, one for each throttle.  You can also do a Google Search for PSX-1AC and may find the for a little less.

Gust be sure you get the PSX-1AC boards, they make a lot of other boards that are designed for DC voltage that will not work with our AC powered trains.

Hope this helps you out.
