Although I am an advocate of battery power, there is still a good case for track based conventional running. A few years ago I designed a track power based relay controlled system for running two trains simultaneously on the same track loop. A number of modelers incorporated this design into their layouts. Track power also lends itself nicely to switch controlled spurs in a multi-spur yard. An additional comment, DC track power is also very useful in addition to AC.
