Just purchased a Cruise Commander M and I'm installing it in a Lionel Allegheny 6-28011 (the litigation version).  The issue I have is the ERR manual is not very clear where to connect the J4 connector pin #1 wire (blue).  This is the serial Data IN from the R2LC.  I am assuming it might connect to the IR connector somehow.  Just need to be sure where to connect this wire.  I've sent Ken with ERR a couple of photos of my R2LC motherboard but have not heard back from him.  I also know I have to upgrade my R2LC06 to a R2LC08.  I have ordered that item.  Any help will be appreciated.

I have installed many ERR conversions, but this kit is just a little different.  I am including pictures of the radio board for the R2lC and the R2LC itself.  Also, I have searched for a wiring diagram for this engine without any luck.  Does anyone know if one is available and if so is willing to share.  Again, your help will be appreciated.

Look at the motherboard next to the connector for the text "M3". That is pin 23. The pin opposite is pin 24 serial data. Plug in the R2LC and see if any of pin 24 is visible between the motherboard and the R2LC. If not you will have to solder the blue wire to the underside of the board to pin 24.

Here is pic showing top and bottom of the motherboard.

Norton,

Thank you so much for your reply.  The SD-60 example showed this step but wasn't sure if that was my solution.  Going to have to solder the wire to the bottom side.  Curious about one thing though, what is the switch on that board for?  Again just curiosity.

Again Norton, thank you for your assistance.

Bob, I am pretty sure its the chuff switch. I suspect its located right over one of the axles. When you replace the board after soldering the wire make sure the switch opens and closes with wheel rotation. Use an ohmmeter on the contacts above the switch. With the board off you should be able to see the cam on the axle to know if its one or two chuffs.

That's a secondary chuff switch, but it's only used on some obscure locomotive.  It's simply in parallel with the chuff switch that's actually down on the axle, the motherboard is way away from the axle!

I think that chuff switch was used in some locomotive that had a mechanical smoke unit, that's the only reason I can imagine it being way up there.

FWIW, I have the same Allegheny, and I can assure you that chuff switch doesn't do anything in that locomotive.

Gun Runner John,

The switch I'm referring to is the slide switch on the top right hand side of the radio board looking at the bottom of the board.  This is the top picture in the two picture illustration.  It's similar to the run program switch (slide switch).  I'm just curious to know if it performs any function.  I would know if I had a wiring diagram on this engine.  I know there is a schematic on this engine somewhere.

Thank you.

Bob

Folks, I believe there are 2 switches on this board; the cherry switch on the "tongue" of the board, and as Bob has pointed out, there is a slide switch at the top right edge of the top picture; went to the Lionel website and supplement 46 has the wiring diagram for this board (2-10-4, 2-8-8-4) and that slide switch is not connected to anything in this supplement.
