Customizing the RailKing "Pittsburgh" Control Tower

The RailKing 30-9031 Pennsylvania railroad control tower is a very well detailed example of a typical tower used in railroad yards and at railroad intersections. This Pittsburgh tower is very attractive.   It includes a detailed lighted interior.

Note: Typical Pennsylvania prototype towers are shown in the attached photos.

Modifications to the model:

1. Repaint the base.

2. Change out the interior lighting using LEDs.

3. Add a control tower operator to the interior.

Note: This post is intended as information for the general reader. If others care to comment on the topic or contribute ideas to further the modeling activity it is there option to do so.

Adding LEDs:

I will be adding "overhead lighting" for both the upper and lower rooms.  I will add a "ceiling" for each room and install the LEDs through the ceiling.

I use 12vdc for lighting all my accessories.  I have purchased white LEDs with a resistor and wires already installed. These can be directly wired to the 12 volts.
