If you cut the barrel jack off a Z-1000 brick, how do you know which wire is positive and which is negative ?

After doing some googling, it looks like the z-1000 puts out approximately 20 volts AC. So there really isn’t a positive or negative. Besides, there should be a label on the brick that tells what is what coming out of the barrel Jack.

What I am looking to do is cut the barrel jack off and connect the wire directly to a TIU without using banana plugs. I need to know how to tell which wire goes to the red post and which goes to the black post.
Follow the procedure for "phasing" the Z1000 with another transformer. You'll learn which lead is equivalent to the other transformer's common (black) and hot (red). This thread discusses phasing.
Instead of cutting the plug off, buy a 5.5mm jack that has screw terminals. This thread references the part to order.
If the Z1000 is your only transformer, no problem. It's AC. The secondary is isolated from the input side, so there is no ground.

Those plug adapters are nice. I picked up a 10-pack from Amazon last week for around $8 and used them for a slot car project. The ones I picked up were rated for 36V, and 5A DC.
